Net neutrality threatens Internet investment dollars

Content first IPTV consideration, panel says
As IPTV operators seek greater cooperation with broadcasters, content should be their first and foremost consideration, according to a panel of broadcasting and telco executives. The NAB discussion 'True Hollywood Story,' moderated by Whit Jackson, VP of business development and studio relations at SecureMedia, concluded that the rules have changed for IPTV providers, and they now must meet the conditions of licensing content, rather than just transporting it.

TM Forum demos Content Encounter
The TM Forum, a cross between a trade association and standards body, realized that as convergence was becoming more of a reality, the telcos would have to expand their ecosystems to welcome the content companies into the mix. The result of this realization was the Content Encounter, which went public in November of last year. Shown as a demo at trade shows, the technology is actually designed to develop a content ecosystem that is, to date, not yet ready for public use.

Industry Perspective: Kamil Grajski, FLO Forum president
Among an array of standards for mobile television, the FLO Forum had a presence at the NAB Show this week promoting Forward Link Only (FLO) as the standard of choice to expedite the mobile TV market. A body of more than 90 wireless companies added Media Excel to its roster, as well as announced that its Open Conditional Access (CA) Framework would be used by Irdeto, Nagravision and NDS to integrate their solutions with MediaFLO. As the mobile TV market continues to attract a lot of attention at the conference, Kamil Grajski, VP of engineering for QUALCOMM and president of FLO Forum, spoke with Telephony associate news editor Sarah Reedy about what the FLO Forum sees as the three biggest trends in mobile TV today.

Telefonia Bonairiano NV (Telbo), the Dutch Caribbean’s telecommunications company, has selected Kasenna LivingRoom middleware and MediaBase video servers to launch a new video service, called MiTV. MiTV is the first IPTV service in the Caribbean island of Bonaire and is considered to be the showcase model for Telbo partner telecom companies that serve an additional 24 countries.
