Lehigh Cement to modernize Mitchell plant
Source: Lehigh Cement Co.
Lehigh Cement, a subsidiary of German building materials giant HeidelbergCement, announced plants earlier in the month to expand and upgrade its manufacturing plant in Mitchell, Ind. Although the capacity of the plant will double to somewhere around 1.5 million tons per year, the modernized plant will use the latest technology to significantly reduce energy usage, fuel consumption, and emission per ton of cement produced. The company says it will work closely with the responsible government and permitting agencies to meet air quality standards and other requirements. The company currently serves customers in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and the entire Midwest.

"We have built new plants and expanded existing facilities from the United States to Turkey and from Canada to China," said Lehigh's incoming President and CEO (as of January 2008) Albert Scheuer. "We have the technical ability to experience to manufacture cement in a manner that is environmentally sustainable while maintaining the highest quality standards.

Daniel Harrington, president of the company's North Division, emphasized the need for close cooperation between Lehigh and local and state officials, customers, employees, and the community. "We have played a key role in the community for generations," he said. "We look forward to open dialogue with the state of Indiana and the city of Mitchell as we move through the permitting process."

The current three-long-dry-kiln operation will be reduced to one short kiln with a multi-stage preheater and calciner to cut fuel usage. The vertical roller mills will use hot kiln gas to dry raw materials and produce finished cement using less power. Bins and conveyors will store and feed recycled materials and fuels for the process line.

Although Lehigh expects the permitting and construction processes to take some time, it is currently anticipating a start up for the new plant sometime in 2012.

Holcim Ste. Genevieve facility to include Powitec thermography technology
Source: Powitec Systems
Currently erecting the world largest single kiln in Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., Holcim (US) Inc. announced its intention to order technology from Powitec Systems as part of the operations. The equipment will include a PiT Indicator Thermography system for the kiln; a PiT Indicator Video system for the kiln; and two more for the cooler.

The PiT Indicator thermography is an intelligent thermography system. With digital image processing, patented "electronic dust filter," and dynamic RGB-Thermography, it shows a more sharp and detailed picture than conventional pyrometric cameras. Characteristic and dynamic behavior of the flame is visualized by Polylines, delivering precise information about flame, flame shape, clinker bed, and coating. This essential information supports the process analysis and process control of clinker production.

The Ste. Genevieve plant also decided to test the PiT Predictor, a soft sensor that uses self-learning adaptive software and information from the thermography. It is based on a sophisticated neural net technology and predicts essential process parameters like free lime content online, allowing the operator to react in time before having laboratory values.

The plant's pyroprocessing system with new generation clinker cooler and in-line preheater with low NOx and CO calciner will have the ability to produce 12,000 metric tons per day clinker. This greenfield plant is being built along the Mississippi River and is due to be completed in 2009.

PCA names McCarthy new president/CEO
Source: Portland Cement Association
After the retirement of John Gleason--PCA's president and chief executive officer since 1986--earlier this year, the PCA Board of Directors named Brian McCarthy to the position at its annual meeting on Oct. 23, 2007.

"PCA has an outstanding and well-earned reputation as a top trade association. I hope to continue that tradition while moving forward to meet new challenges and opportunities," said McCarthy in his remarks to the Board.

McCarthy previously served as chief operating officer for the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), a trade association representing all sectors of the information technology industry. McCarthy led efforts to expand the group's membership and its products and services. Today, CompTIA has members in more than 100 countries and has become the world's largest provider of vendor-neutral IT certifications.

Prior to joining CompTIA in 1999, McCarthy was executive director of the International Reprographic Association, Printing Industry of Indiana, and the Master Printers Association of Illinois. He is a graduate of University of Illinois.

2nd Holcim Awards recognize sustainable construction
Source: Holcim (US) Inc.
Construction projects from all across North America are now eligible to compete for the widely recognized Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction, which throw a spotlight on projects that meet current needs for housing and infrastructure without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The Holcim Awards, an international competition, is an initiative of the Swiss-based Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction to celebrate innovative, future-oriented, and tangible sustainable construction projects from around the globe. The Holcim Awards are supported in the North America region by the Holcim Ltd Group companies Holcim (US) Inc., St. Lawrence Cement, and Aggregate Industries. The North American region includes the US, Canada, Bermuda and the Bahamas.

The Holcim Awards competition is open to anyone involved in planning, design, or development of a sustainable construction project, including architects, planners, engineers, or project owners. All building projects are eligible for the competition if the project has not commenced execution prior to June 1, 2007. There are no construction materials requirements or restrictions on the types of projects, as long as they embody the environmental, economic and social values of sustainable construction.

Prize money will total $2 million for the 2008-2009 competition. Regional prizes range from $10,000 to $100,000, with the Global Holcim Awards ranging from $50,000 to $300,000. Nominations and entries in the competition will be accepted until Feb. 29, 2008 at www.holcimawards.org.

A special category of the awards competition is open for project visions at a conceptual level, during an early stage of design, or with a low probability of execution. In addition, the Next Generation category is open for professionals younger than 35 years of age. Juries will award three Next Generation prizes at the regional level.

Winners of the Holcim Awards North American regional competition (except Next Generation), selected in 2008, will advance to the global competition to be held in 2009.

Award applicants are evaluated by independent juries in five regions of the world, including North America, using a five-point definition of sustainable construction. These "target issues" serve as a benchmark to measure the degree to which a building contributes to sustainable development. They include:

-- Quantum change and transferability
-- Ethical standards and social equity
-- Ecological quality and energy conservation
-- Economic performance and compatibility
-- Contextual and aesthetic impact

Detailed descriptions of each target issue and a full list of the members of each jury are available on www.holcimawards.org. Comprehensive information on the competition is also available. All entries must be submitted online in English only.

Product Spotlight
Opacity Monitor
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc.
This company announces the availability of the Model 445, an opacity and dust concentration monitor with built-in test functions that include automatic four-point linearity and optical surface contamination checks. Joining the firm's family of stack gas monitoring instrumentation, the Model 445 measures the mass concentration of dust in stack effluents from power plants, cement and steel plants, and other industrial sites that require a continuous emission monitoring system. The Model 445 meets all U.S. EPA PS1 and ASTM 6216-98 requirements.

The Model 445 also has a range of contamination correction that can be up to 50 percent of light attenuation resulting in longer free maintenance intervals. The optical and electronic elements used in the monitoring system are contained within the sender/receiver unit. A durable pulsed LED serves as the light source and an integral sighting device eases alignment of the sender/receiver and the reflector units. To protect the optical surfaces from dust and high temperature, the sender/receiver and reflector are purged with clean plant air. The connection unit contains the display, operating elements, and all connections. Options include an RCU-MS remote control unit and remote diagnostics via modem.
