Wind turbine-wired CalPortland mill towers
among EPA Green Power Users
Sources: California Portland Cement Co.; Staff
reports
The CalPortland Mojave Plant in south central California ranks fifth
among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 20 On-site Green
Power Users. Wind turbines the company recently erected around the site
perimeter generate 50 million kilowatt-hours of power annually,
providing the cement mill 11 percent of its electricity needs. EPA
figures show that the wind-derived 50 million kWh is equivalent to the
amount of electricity needed to power 5,000 average homes annually and
avoids carbon dioxide emissions comparable to what 7,000 passenger
vehicles would generate in a year. To read the entire story, Click

2009 global cement consumption stabilization
followed by 2010 recovery
Source: Portland Cement Association
World cement consumption is expected to decline 1.7 percent in 2009,
a modest drop cushioned by a roughly 4.0 percent growth in utilization
by China and India. According to a recent PCA report, gains in those two
nations, which together account for 58 percent of the world’s cement
consumption, will mask the harsh downturns predicted for many of the
global cement markets. Among developing economies, consumption is
anticipated to decline nearly 16 percent during 2009. To read the entire

Environmental firm harvests silicate-rich rice
hull ash as commercial admixture
Sources: ChK Group, Inc.; J.C. Roumain LLC; Staff
reports
With an eye toward converting landfill-bound agricultural waste into
concrete-grade pozzolan, environmental technology company ChK Group
completed piloting high-temperature rice hull processing to yield a
fine, high-silicate (>90 percent) ash with performance properties
similar to silica fume. With a preliminary round of testing already
completed (the results of which were presented in late June at the Green
Chemistry and Engineering conference in College Park, Md.), the company
is now seeking investors and strategic partners in the cement and
concrete industries to commercialize the carbon-neutral product. To read

Feeder
Hopper
Jeffrey Specialty Equipment Corp./Rader
Cos./K-Tron
This manufacturer has introduced an optional hopper for its feeders
to provide a streamlined feeding process. In the application of
vibrating feeders, hoppers are a critical part of reaching full capacity
and control of throughput. A well-designed hopper also helps to
eliminate bridging of material above the feeder, excessive feeder
loading, and excessive feeder line and isolation component wear.
The hoppers are designed to the specific application with the proper
gate and throat dimensions as well as the proper hopper wall angles.
With the feeder mounted under the hopper, a more predictable feed rate
can be obtained. Skirt boards are also a critical area of feeder
operation and have been incorporated into the hopper design. These
boards are located at the proper width as well as the proper bottom edge
taper, eliminating the binding of material between the skirt board and
feeder trough.
The hopper simplifies the feeder installation by
allowing the user to install a bolt flange. The maker specifies a
pattern and location of the flange at a specified dimension above the
feeder discharge point. The hopper is bolted to this flange to insure
the proper transfer trough and provides maximum width for greatest
capacity. (+1) 856-256-3014
