Industry measures fallout if EPA designates coal ash a hazardous waste

The Environmental Protection Agency has extended the public comment period for its proposed rule, “Identification and Listing of Special Wastes; Disposal of Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) from Electric Utilities” through November 19. One option the agency proposes would list impoundment- or landfill-bound CCR under Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Subtitle C. Cement, concrete and coal ash management/marketing interests argue that such a listing, and the attendant hazardous waste designation for CCR, would stigmatize fly ash, undermine its commercial viability as supplementary cementing material (SCM), and hamper industry strides in environmental stewardship…To read entire article, click here.
