Anytime
Fitness, Hastings, MN, announced it has opened its 1,300th club and
recently signed its 900,000th member. Anytime Fitness plans to add
additional clubs in India, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Ireland,
Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
24 Hour
Fitness, San Ramon, CA, will hold a grand opening Wednesday for its
newest club, the Southglenn Super Sport club in Centennial, CO. The
46,873-square-foot club includes amenities such as a sauna, a steam
room, a whirlpool, a kids club and a pro shop. 24 Hour also announced
that its Sport Club in Taylorsville, UT, has been named the official
training center for the Arena Football League’s Utah Blaze.
Portland State
University held the official grand opening for its Academic and
Student Recreation Center on April 1 and 2. The event was celebrated
with speeches, concerts and games. The center was recently awarded LEED
Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for its
incorporation of sustainable design and construction practices and
strategies. The
mixed-use building houses the schools of outdoor recreation and
social work, classrooms, parking and transportation, a bike hub,
Portland city archives, the chancellor’s office and assorted retail
outlets.
The Mandell Jewish Community
Center, West Hartford, CT, inaugurated its new 150-kilowatt combined
heat and power cogeneration plant (CHP) on Thursday. CHP systems use
natural gas to produce energy and heat water. The project includes a
15-year discount on gas transmission through the Connecticut Department
of Public Utility Control. JCC officials said it will save them $100,000
per year on energy expenses and has an estimated payback of four years.
It is the third JCC in Connecticut to install a CHP system.
Employees of the Cape Coral (FL) Police Department lost a combined
627 pounds during its annual fitness challenge that began Jan. 9 and
ended Sunday, according to the News-Press of Fort Myers, FL. The
department had 40 participants competing for team and individual honors
in overall weight and fat loss.

Cybex International
Inc., Medway, MA, announced that the Aria Resort and Casino and the
Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas both installed a broad range of
the company’s cardio and strength-training equipment. “Today more
than ever, hotel and resort guests have extremely sophisticated tastes
in health and wellness services,” says John Aglialoro, Cybex chairman
and CEO. The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino includes two new towers with
860 additional rooms and the Reliquary Spa. The recently opened Aria
Resort and Casino features 150,000 square feet of gaming and an
80,000-square-foot spa and salon.
24 Hour
Fitness, San Ramon, CA, released bodybugg
mobile, a mobile-enabled Web site that allows bodybugg calorie
management system users who have iPhone and iPod Touch devices a way to
log their daily food intake and check their progress of reaching their
fitness goals. 24 Hour introduced the My24 iPhone application last
December.
The American Council on Exercise
(ACE) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month by enhancing
its offerings to fitness professionals through its new Get Fit portal. At its show
last month in San Diego, the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub
Association gave ACE its Future Shape of the Fitness Profession
award in recognition of ACE’s 25 years of service to the
industry.
Eldorado
Climbing Walls, Boulder, CO, just completed a climbing wall at the
Campbell County Recreation Center in Gillette, WY, designed to resemble
the Devils Tower National Monument. The climbing structure has a
circumference of 74 feet and a height of 42 feet. It is a combination of
Eldorado’s SHOTRock and High Performance texture that allowed the
company to recreate Devils Tower on the most visible side of the
climbing wall while providing advanced climbing terrain on the rest of
the structure.
Advantage Fitness Products
(AFP), Los Angeles, has completed the Club Espiritu, an exclusive
five-star fitness facility at Espiritu Del Mar in Los Cabos, Mexico. AFP
is a provider of fitness facility consultation, design, supply and
service. AFP and Del Mar Development worked together to create a fitness
experience that would be like no other in Los Cabos and bring a
significant element of added service, care and value to the facility,
according to AFP.
