In Brief...
Klaus Hilgers, founder and president of Epoch Consultants Inc.,
has died. Hilgers was a consultant in the industry and a speaker at
trade shows, including the Club Industry trade shows, for many years. He
died while in Kazakhstan on a speaking engagement. The cause of death is
unknown at this time.
David Barton Gym will open its first West Coast gym in The Shops at
The Bravern in downtown Bellevue, WA, as early as November 2008. At that
time, approximately 2,300 Microsoft employees will be housed in the two
office towers of the project. The plans for the 37,000-square-foot
facility include a strength training floor, yoga studio and space for
group training classes.

Go Figure Inc., a
customer- and member-management software company based in Sugar Land,
TX, announced translation of its software into six new languages:
Spanish, Dutch, Russian, Greek, Hebrew and Arabic. These are in addition
to French, Italian, German and Turkish, which were made available last
year. The launch of the software in multiple languages is in response to
the increased need worldwide to manage member-based businesses.
Arno Niemand, Body Bar Systems
Inc.’s owner and chairman, was awarded the FILA Gold Star, the
highest honor awarded by the international wrestling federation. The
International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, also known in
French as Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées (FILA), is
the governing body of international amateur wrestling. Niemand was
awarded the FILA Gold Star on the mat prior to the men’s freestyle
finals on March 2 during the Pan American Championships in Colorado
Springs, CO.
Polar has formed a partnership
with the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA) to
create an enhanced personal training certification, integrating
cardiovascular education and heart rate monitor technology into
NESTA’s Personal Fitness Trainer 2.0 certification program beginning
this month. This marks the first time cardio-specific training will be
combined with heart rate monitor education and offered to personal
trainers as part of their certification process. Students enrolled in
NESTA’s Personal Fitness Trainer 2.0 enhanced certification program
option will receive and train with a Polar F11 heart rate monitor as
part of their educational process. NESTA’s certification workshops
will also incorporate these training methodologies and heart rate
monitoring education from Polar.
The Smoky Mountain Sports Complex in Elizabethton, TN, opened in
late 2007 and has had 33 local and out-of-state basketball teams
competing in weekend tournaments. The owner designed the facility that
includes 21,000 square feet of Taraflex Sports Flooring for
its four basketball courts and six volleyball courts, along with
amenities for players, coaches, referees and spectators.
Equinox Fitness Clubs throughout the United States celebrated
American Heart Month in March by raising heart rates and funds for heart
health through the company’s first Treadmill Mile-A-Thon. Equinox and
Life Fitness pledged to match
runners and walkers $1 for every mile logged in one day on Life Fitness
treadmills. The effort from thousands of exercisers tracked 24,502 miles
to raise $24,502 for the American Heart Association, the nation’s
oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to building
healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke.
CheckFree
Health & Fitness, now part of Fiserv Inc., announced that Titan
Fitness, an investment company and Gold’s Gym franchisee, will utilize
CheckFree club management software and outsourced billing services at
all clubs managed by the company. The CheckFree software and billing
services are currently in use at eight Titan Fitness clubs, with six
additional clubs scheduled for implementation in the spring of 2008.
Balanced Body partnered with
Bally Total Fitness to upgrade and expand the Bally Total Pilates
program. Balanced Body is providing instructor training sessions and
workshops for approximately 150 Bally instructors across the country,
along with supplying the fitness centers with Allegro Reformers, EXO
Chairs and Pilates Arcs.
