from 26 states gathered May 21 and 22 in Washington, DC, at the
International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association’s (IHRSA)
Sixth Annual Legislative Summit. The IHRSA members mounted a coordinated
effort to remove federal barriers to exercise and focus legislators’
attention on the need to transform the health care system from one that
focuses on sick care to one that focuses on prevention and wellness,

Council Upholds Anytime Fitness Fines
ST. PAUL, MN -- The city council of St. Paul, MN, voted unanimously
to uphold the $500 fines of two Anytime Fitness franchisees in St. Paul
for not having CPR-trained staff on the premises at all times at the

Wolverine World Wide
Family Y Expands
BELMONT, MI -- The Wolverine World Wide Family YMCA in Belmont, MI,
recently celebrated the opening of its $2 million, 17,795-square-foot
expansion, according to the Rockford Independent. As of the
middle of May, the Y had 9,300 members with room for 2,000 more due to
the expansion.
The expansion, which increased the Y’s size by almost 40 percent,
added more family locker rooms, an expanded Kid Zone, a multipurpose
room, a youth and family gymnasium, a kids fitness center, and the James
Balk Family Wellness Center, according to the newspaper.

Dedicates Fitness Center to WWII Hero
DAVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, AZ -- Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in
Arizona recently held a dedication ceremony to name its fitness center
after Tech. Sgt. Arthur J. Benko, a World War II veteran. Airmen and
members of the Desert Lightning team attended the ceremony to show
support and to pay respects to Benko, who was a turret gunner aboard a

Life Time Fitness recently appointed Scott C. Lutz as its
executive vice president and chief marketing officer. Lutz had served as
a senior vice president at Best Buy Co. Inc. since 2006 and previously
held executive management roles at Procter & Gamble, General Mills and
ConAgra. Lutz will be responsible for all of Life Time’s marketing
operations and will report to Life Time President and CEO Michael
Gerend.
Martin Stein is the new chief operating officer of Global Fitness
Holdings, which owns and operates 29 Urban Active Health and Fitness
Clubs in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. Stein had been senior vice
president of marketing for the company. He will be responsible for the
strategic and operational leadership of the Lexington, KY-based
company’s sales operations, marketing and management divisions.
Jeff Jervik is the new president and CEO of Fitness Together
Franchise Holdings Inc., succeeding Rick Sikorski, the company’s
founder, who will become chairman of the board. Jervik will lead the
overall strategic direction of the company, including the growth and
support of Fitness Together, a personal training fitness franchise, and
Elements Therapeutic, a massage therapy franchise. Together, the
franchise has more than 500 franchisees across five countries.
24 Hour Fitness has formed a marketing partnership with Everlast
Worldwide Inc. to provide a boxing fitness class in more than 250 24
Hour Fitness locations. The Everlast Shadow Box Workout will be a
45-minute class consisting of 12 three-minute boxing rounds that
alternate between punch combos and conditioning exercises.
The National Academy of Sports Medicine hosted the second National
Basketball Athletic Trainers Association Integrated Manual Therapy
seminar last week in Orlando. The two-day seminar provided NBA athletic
trainers and strength and conditioning coaches with the latest research
and information surrounding manual muscle testing, reconditioning
techniques and injury-prevention solutions.
Equinox Fitness Clubs has leased 40,000 square feet in a landmark
building in the heart of Boston’s financial district. The new upscale
club will open in April 2009 and will be Equinox’s second location in
Boston.

sales growth in the first quarter of 2008, Paramount Fitness Corp. is
