IHRSA Launches
Initiative for Teen Fitness
BOSTON -- The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub
Association (IHRSA) recently launched the Teen Fitness Connection, a
nationwide initiative designed to introduce exercise to teenagers by
offering free summer memberships.
More than 85 IHRSA-member health clubs and almost 3,400 teenagers around
the country are currently enrolled in the program, which offers
“first-time visitor” teens ages 12 to 17 a complimentary membership
from June 22 to Aug. 31. Teens must check in by 3 p.m. and leave by 5
p.m. on weekdays. Hours also can be set on a club-by-club basis. The
Teen Fitness Connection is the brainchild of Geoff Dyer, CEO and founder
of Lifestyle Family Fitness, St. Petersburg, FL.

Hosts SEAL Fitness Challenge
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Forty-eight individuals gathered in Oklahoma City
earlier this month to see if they had what it takes to be one of the
Navy’s most elite, a Navy SEAL. Held in conjunction with Oklahoma City
Navy Week, the SEAL Fitness Challenge was held at the Oklahoma City
Community College Aquatic Center. More than 20 U.S. cities will host
Navy weeks in 2008 in an effort to increase awareness in metropolitan
areas that do not have a significant Navy fleet presence. Read the full

A party to raise funds for celebrity fitness trainer Darius
Miller, who remains in a coma after he was attacked and beaten Christmas
night, was held last night in Atlanta. Two of Miller’s clients, Takeo
Spikes, a linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles, and former New York
Giants linebacker Carlos Emmons, hosted the fundraiser, which will help
with Miller’s medical expenses. Donations can be made on the Web site for Spikes’ and Emmons’
foundation. Apollo Holmes, who was arrested in January on aggravated
assault charges and was released on $100,000 bond, has not cooperated
with police, and investigators have not found any more suspects, the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Crunch Fitness has named Michael R. Jacobs as its new president and
chief financial officer. Jacobs will be responsible for Crunch’s
growth strategy, financial planning and information management, and he
will be working with Crunch CEO Tim Miller. Before joining Crunch,
Jacobs was chief operating officer and member of the board of directors
of B.R. Guest Restaurants. He has also served as chief operating officer
at ACS TradeOne Marketing, Haynes Security, and a food and beverage
manufacturer and distribution company.
MVP Sports Clubs is now offering performance enhancing training at
its Rockford, IL, club. The company added a Parisi Speed School at that
facility to help attract athletes ages 7 and up into the program, which
is designed to maximize physical and mental potential.
LifeCenter Plus Health and Fitness Center’s 17th annual golf
scramble in Franklin Township, OH, raised $2,000 for The Boys and Girls
Clubs of The Western Reserve.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National
Swimming Pool Foundation established a Cryptosporidium (Crypto) Outbreak
Alert System to help aquatic facilities protect their patrons from
recreational water illness. Aquatic managers can sign up for the alerts
online. During the
past two decades, Crypto has become recognized as one of the most common
causes of waterborne disease in recreational water and drinking water in
the United States.

iTech Fitness Inc.,
creators of the XRKade, recently signed its 50th XRKade location in
North America. Mike Hansen, president and CEO, says the company will
have more than 100 locations before the end of the year. Hansen credits
the company’s success to the focus on building a business that is all
about the brand experience.
More than 40 seventh- and eighth-grade students from Albany Park
Multicultural Academy (APMA) in Chicago visited the international
headquarters of Life Fitness
in Schiller Park, IL, to get an insider’s look at the fitness industry
from a manufacturing perspective. The three-hour tour was an extension
of a yearlong relationship the company has had with the school. In 2007,
Life Fitness worked with educators at APMA to provide comprehensive
fitness programming for the Chicago public school through its circuit
series strength-training system.
Club H Fitness’ fourth club in Jersey City, NJ, was designed by Fabiano Designs, Montclair,
NJ. The 30,000-square-foot luxury gym and spa has a modern design. The
club features Fabiano Designs’ “social pods” throughout the gym
floor to maximize member-to-member interaction opportunities during a
workout. The facility also features three group exercise studios,
stretching areas and a full-service café.
Go Figure Inc. donated its
club management software and hardware to the Healthworks Foundation
Fitness Center, scheduled to open later this year in Dorchester, MA.
Construction recently began on the nonprofit fitness facility that will
specifically target the fitness needs of children and women. The
software will manage member data at the club, as well as process
payments for any purchases made, manage inventory, allow members to sign
in with a barcoded keytag scan and present a personalized welcome screen
once the member has scanned in.
The FirstHealth Center for Health & Fitness in Pinehurst, NC,
decreased member attrition by 5 percent over the last year while using
Retention
Management’s services. Year to year, FirstHealth decreased
attrition from 34 percent to 29 percent. FirstHealth plans to roll out
the company's service to their five other centers soon. Retention
Management currently provides the center with a series of automated
member communication services, including personalized supportive e-mails
that are based on each member’s attendance patterns, on-going e-mail
marketing messages and a new member orientation/education program.
