Drain Act Now Effective
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- Beginning Dec. 19, public pool operators
must ensure that their pools comply with a federal act that requires
these pools to be equipped with drain covers that are certified to
comply with the new American Society of Mechanical Engineers/American
National Standards Institute 2007 standard. The Virginia Graeme Baker
Pool & Spa Safety Act applies to all public pools and spas, including
those at health clubs, YMCAs, community parks, hotels, universities,

Ingests Rat Poison at Club’s Child Care Center
DES MOINES, IA -- A 1-year-old girl ingested rat poison at a fitness
club child care center in Des Moines, IA. The container of poison was
under or behind a piece of play equipment at the Aspen Athletic Club in
a place where club staff did not think a child could reach, local police

is suing LA Fitness in Huntingdon Valley, PA, claiming that LA Fitness

telling them B&R is on the verge of bankruptcy, closing or has other

governors to a two-week Capitol Steps Challenge, beginning Jan. 1, 2009.

BRISTOL, ENGLAND -- Work places with on-site gyms could have more
productive employees, a new study by researchers at the University of
Bristol in England finds. Employees’ moods and performance improved on

Benefit Older Adults, Study Finds
CHICAGO -- Working out at local senior centers and YMCAs may help
older adults improve physical functioning and lower their risk factors
for disability, according to a study published in the American

in Brain Linked to Increased BMI
NATIONWIDE -- A meta-analysis of 15 genetic studies, covering more
than 90,000 patients, found six new genetic variants associated with an
increased body mass index (BMI) and risk of obesity. Five of those genes
are active in the brain, which means that obesity risk could be related
more to behavior than to metabolism, researchers suggest. Read the full

In October, the sixth annual American Family Fitness 5K/10K
Run/Walk raised $48,000 for Children’s Hospital, Richmond, VA. The
event drew 800 participants, who started and finished at the hospital.
In addition to the run/walk, the Tuckaway Mascot Challenge, which is a
one-mile fun run for children ages 5-12, was held on and around hospital
grounds. Including this year’s gift, American Family Fitness has
raised more than $235,000 for Children’s Hospital since 1997. Proceeds
will benefit the renovation of the hospital’s playground and
uncompensated care.
Life Time Fitness’ member magazine, Experience Life,
received 14 awards at the 12th annual Minnesota Magazine and
Publications Association (MMPA) Publishing Excellence Awards gala. The
awards included a silver award for overall excellence. This is the sixth
consecutive year that Experience Life has garnered multiple MMPA
awards for its editorial and design achievements. Experience Life
competed in the general interest/circulation over 60,000 category. The
magazine has a circulation of more than 600,000, with an estimated total
reach of more than 2.5 million readers.
Urban Active, Lexington, KY, celebrated its one-year anniversary
last month. In the past year, Urban Active has opened nine locations to
bring its club total to 32. Most of the new clubs are in Ohio and
Kentucky.
Cleveland Clinic (OH) recently added free Curves memberships to its
employee wellness program. More than 27,000 clinic employees will gain
access to Curves at no cost. This is Curves’ first-ever partnership
with a major academic medical center and hospital system, and one of the
only first-dollar agreements between Curves and an employer that is not
contingent upon participation.

World Fitness Systems
Inc., Spring City, PA, is launching an online competitive training
program next month, the company announced. The program allows users to
participate in a global fitness competition via Internet data collection
and rankings. Participants are ranked in various categories according to
their performance in gym-based exercises. Starting in July 2009, World
Fitness Systems will host regional and world competitions for cash
prizes.
Life Fitness has promoted
Tim McCarthy to vice president of the international business unit. Mike
Zinda has been promoted to replace McCarthy as vice president of sales
for national accounts and Latin America. McCarthy joined Life Fitness in
1991 as a military sales representative and brings years of sales
experience in the fitness industry to the position. Zinda most recently
served as the vice president of sales for national accounts. Raj Rao,
who had been vice president of the international business unit, is
relocating to Asia to be closer to his family.
The Ab Coaster Co. filed a
legal action alleging improper acts by Ohio-based NetNetStore.com Inc.
and Rakatak.com, which it says infringed upon its intellectual property
rights and risked interfering with The Ab Coaster Co.’s strong
relations with its customers and authorized dealers. The complaint
alleges that NetNetStore and Rakatak committed patent and trademark
infringement, as well as unfair competition, by selling illicit direct
copies of the patented Ab Coaster product and using the federally
registered Ab Coaster trademark.
