A woman known as the “gym bag bandit” who stole personal
items from 24 Hour Fitness members in Sacramento County, CA, has been
sentenced to six years in prison, The Sacramento Bee reports.
Angela Martinez used a stolen 24 Hour membership card to enter several
24 Hour clubs. After breaking into lockers and taking the personal
items, Martinez used the victims’ identification and credit cards to
commit more thefts. Her getaway driver, Robert Martinez, was previously
convicted and sentenced to 32 months in state prison.
Planet Fitness, Dover, NH, recently honored its franchise in Oneida,
NY, for having the highest percentage of women members among the
company’s 282 clubs, The Oneida Daily Dispatch reports. Women
make up 66 percent of the membership at the Oneida club, which opened
last October.
Colorado Athletic Clubs, operated by The Wellbridge Co., Denver, is
planning to open a 40,000-square-foot facility at a mall in Boulder, CO,
later this year. The company has four centers in the Denver area, with a
fifth club under construction at the Tabor Center in downtown
Denver.
One2One BodyScapes, Southborough, MA, had a 17 percent cumulative
increase in sales in April compared to March at its 11 personal training
studios across the country, according to founder Rob Shapiro. The
company’s personal training sales in the first quarter of 2009 were up
9 percent over the fourth quarter of 2008, he adds.
The 2009 IDEA World Fitness Convention will be held Aug. 12-16 at
the Anaheim (CA) Convention Center. The theme is “Inspire: Be the
Change,” and the focus will be on creating success and positive change
for club owners and their clients. This year’s convention offers more
than 300 educational sessions, 135 presenters, nine pre-conference
workshops and the chance to earn more than 23 continuing education
credits. More than 5,000 attendees from 65 countries are expected to
