$350,000 to Fight Diabetes
IRVING, TX -- Gold’s Gym International, Irving, TX, is the top
national fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de
Cure, a series of cycling events held in 40 states that raise money to
benefit the association and other programs designed to prevent, cure and
manage diabetes.
Gold’s, along with its franchisees, employees, members and local
communities, raised more than $350,000 this year. More than 83 teams and
2,000 riders represented Gold’s in this year’s events.

Brad Wilkens, director of fitness management and development for
Cooper Fitness Center in Dallas, is the recipient of the fourth annual
John McCarthy Institute Merit Scholarship, which provides full tuition
and a $500 travel stipend to the International Health, Racquet and
Sportsclub Association’s (IHRSA) Institute for Professional Club
Management. The education program will be held Aug. 2-5 at the Resort at
Squaw Creek in Lake Tahoe, CA.
The Planet Fitness Discovery Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
on Tuesday, July 28, at HoteLumière in downtown St. Louis. The
Discovery Day will feature more than 30 pre-approved Planet Fitness
sites in St. Louis, Kansas City, MO, and Springfield, MO. Planet Fitness
corporate staff and franchisees as well as lenders and real estate
brokers will be on hand to answer any questions. The event is free and
open to the public, but because of space limitations, registration must

On June 6, people in all 50 states and Puerto Rico celebrated the
American Hiking Society’s 17th National Trails Day. There were more
than 1,600 events total, a 47 percent increase from the number of events
held in 2008, the association said. The next National Trails Day is

The National Academy of Sports
Medicine (NASM) is offering its Introduction to Personal Fitness
Training (IPFT) course at no charge through July 31. Students who enroll
in the IPFT course, which normally costs $149, will receive instruction
on the fundamentals of fitness training and cover core concepts in
flexibility, stabilization, resistance, cardio-respiratory and overall
wellness. Upon completion of the course, students can test their
knowledge with a 100-question exam.
Fitness Anywhere and
Surf Stronger are releasing a new surf-specific training video that
couples suspension training with surfing. The new video includes a
30-minute full-body workout that targets the muscles and movements that
are critical to surfing performance and injury prevention. The video is
the third in the Surf Stronger series and features professional surfer
Holly Beck. The follow-along, real-time video will be sold as a Web
download and requires the use of the TRX Suspension Trainer.
