Bally Files for Chapter
11 Bankruptcy
CHICAGO -- Bally Total Fitness made it official last night: The
second-largest revenue-producing club company in the industry filed for
Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The filing by Chicago-based Bally and more than 40 of its affiliates
took place in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New
York in Manhattan. A first day hearing has not yet been scheduled. Read

Planet Fitness
Names New President
DOVER, NH -- Ben Midgley was recently named president of Planet
Fitness and will assume the day-to-day operations from co-founder Mike
Grondahl on Aug. 9, according to published reports. Midgley comes to
Planet Fitness from 24 Hour Fitness, where he worked for nine years and
most recently served as an executive in charge of the company's
community and business development office. Previously, Midgley led 24
Hour's corporate sales division.

WILMINGTON, DE -- The Fitness Company (TFC), which opened its first
club in 1981, filed Chapter 11 petitions earlier this month in the

Time Fitness to a 33 percent increase in second quarter earnings,
according to financials filed by the company with the Securities and

Purchase Postponed
OAK PARK, IL -- The West Cook YMCA's purchase of 7.7 acres in Forest
Park, IL, for $4.3 million was recently postponed. According to the West
Cook YMCA's Web site, the Y hopes to create a $19 million,
65,000-square-foot facility that will include two indoor swimming pools,
an indoor track, basketball and volleyball courts, multipurpose meeting
rooms for dance and fitness classes, a cardio and weight-training center
for adults, and a family activity center with interactive equipment and

Kansas Addition Delayed
LAWRENCE, KS -- The completion of a $6.3 million addition to the
University of Kansas Student Recreation and Fitness Center has been
delayed, according to the University Daily Kansan. The addition,
which includes four new multipurpose courts, an expansion of the
free-weight area and two more racquetball courts, was scheduled for

Healthy Workforce Act
Introduced
WASHINGTON, DC -- Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) recently introduced
legislation that could encourage businesses to implement workplace
wellness programs for their employees. The Healthy Workforce Act would
provide tax incentives to businesses -- particularly small- and
medium-sized employers -- that provide opportunities for their employees
to lead healthier lives and prevent chronic illnesses. Read the full story.

Sales Expected to Grow
SAN JOSE, CA -- Product sales in the sports and fitness nutrition
market are expected to reach $36 billion by 2010, according to a recent
report by Global Industry Analysts Inc. The United States and Japan
dominate the world sports and nutrition market, collectively accounting
for more than 75 percent of sales. With a more than 81 percent share of
global sales, the food and drink market represents the leading product
group for the sports and nutrition market, according to the report.
Within foods and drinks, the sports/energy bar market represents the
fastest growing segment while the sports/energy drinks market is the
largest.
Study on Women in Sports Released
MOUNT PROSPECT, IL -- Among sports participants age 7 and older,
females make up the majority in four of six activities surveyed in 2006
by the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA), according to data in
the NSGA Sports Participation reports released in June. Females make up
71 percent of those who do aerobic exercise, 60 percent of those who do
exercise walking, 56 percent who work out at a health club and 51

ACE-certified Professionals and AARP joined together to launch a new
fitness program for AARP members. The program's goal is aimed at getting
AARP members to lead healthier and more active lifestyles.
Elements launched a new fitness advisory board, including Nike Elite
Athlete Lena Pereira, to develop classes and fitness programming for the
Miami Beach-based fitness and diet company. Some of the classes
developed by the board include Viva la Latina, a dance class featuring
merengue and salsa music; Bikini Body, which focuses on shoulders, abs
and glutes; and Operation Hot Body, which focuses on sculpting
unflattering areas.
The Oaks at Ojai, a California fitness destination spa, will
celebrate its 30th anniversary in October. The spa includes overnight
accommodations, three meals a day, a choice of 16 fitness classes per
day, and evening entertainment and seminars. The Oaks at Ojai, founded
by Sheila Cluff, will offer special discounts commemorating the
anniversary in October.

Foundation will hold a conference in October to educate those
interested in learning how to prevent drowning and in the basics of
lifeguarding. Some of the topics include swimming lessons for children
and advances in lifeguarding.
Two Fabiano-designed
Gold's Gyms won awards at the 2007 Gold's Gym International Convention
in Las Vegas. The Gold's Gym in Islip, NY, won three awards for Best Gym
of the Year, Best U.S. Gym of the Northeast Region and Best U.S. Gym.
The Gold's Gym in Boise, ID, won the award for Best U.S. Gym for the
West Region. Fabiano Designs has won awards for their clubs each year
for the past 15 years and have more than 46 nominations and awards.
VERT Fitness, an
equipment manufacturer of velocity-enhanced resistance training, plans
to franchise VERT clubs in major U.S. cities. VERT plans to sell up to
six franchises by the end of the year in several cities, including New
York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and San Diego. Current VERT
Fitness Centers are located in Santa Monica, CA, Hermosa Beach, CA, and
Jericho, NY. By 2012, VERT plans to open 320 fitness centers in the
United States, mostly in markets where a professional sports team is
located.
Octane Fitness is
managing its business with Sage Software solutions, a division of
Synergistic Software Solutions LLC. "We now have the information that
allows us to better pinpoint where a problem originates, solving
problems faster," says Scott Savitt, operations director for Octane
Fitness.
