In a state where land, water and material hauling are at a premium and tough environmental regulation a fact of life, California’s Spragues’ Ready Mix has deployed the first closed-loop recycling equipment combination of its kind: a concrete reclaimer separating fine and coarse aggregate, coupled with a slurry-recycling filter that dewaters cement fines to yield nearly ASTM C 94-grade batch water (suspended solids < 60 ppm). Source: World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Geneva

Although cement production by companies participating in a 16-year study increased 53 percent from 1990 to 2006, net carbon dioxide emissions increased only 35 percent, proving a decoupling of production and related emissions. These results were part of the recently released WBCSD’s Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) report, “Cement Industry Energy and CO2 Performance: Getting the Numbers Right (GNR),” representing the collective effort of 18 leading cement companies from around the world. Swederski Concrete chief solidifies industry’s pavement promotion
Sources: Swederski Concrete Construction Inc., Spring Grove, Ill.; National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Silver Spring, Md.; CP staff

Parking lot contractor Len Swederski is advancing pervious and conventional concrete pavement, along whitetopping methods, in summer sessions geared to transportation construction and engineering professionals, public works officials, finishers and ready mixed producers. Swederski Concrete Construction is hosting “Hard Facts,” a July 22 seminar covering pavement design and green concrete in Spring Grove, Ill., near its headquarters. A $70 registration fee covers the 9 a.m.–4 p.m. program, plus copies of ACI 330 and Concrete Pavement Analyst Software. Additional “Hard Facts” information can be obtained from Swederski Concrete Business Development Director (and Wisconsin ready mixed industry veteran) Terry Alby, 815/678-4035; terrya@swederski.com

Separately, NRMCA has enlisted Len Swederski as an instructor for “How to Build a Successful Parking Lot Construction Business,” an August 20-21 seminar in Orlando, Fla. In addition to pavement engineering and construction details, the course provides a concrete vs. asphalt parking area overview. It also examines different contract delivery methods and how they affect the potential for a successful concrete parking lot contracting business. Joining NRMCA behind the seminar are American Society of Concrete Contractors and Florida Concrete & Products Association. Additional information on the program or registration can be obtained from NRMCA’s Gillian McBurney, 240/485-1166, gmcburney@nrmca.org; or, Jessica Moore, 240/485-1152, jmoore@nrmca.org.

NRMCA will offer its first online “Building Green with Concrete Course and Certification Exam.” The July 20-23 course will be broken down into four, two-hour sessions, and examine the use of concrete to minimize building and public works projects’ environmental impact during construction and operation. After completing the course and passing an exam, participants will receive NRMCA Green Building Specialist designation. Participants are not required to complete the “Concrete’s Role in Sustainable Development, Part I” course, but it is assumed they will understand the sustainability issues it covers. Information on the Building Green course can be obtained from NRMCA's Erin Ashley at 888/846-7622, ext. 1306; eashley@nrmca.org
