Regulation-hungry lawmakers praise Obama pick to
head OSHA

Professor David Michaels, Ph.D., as Assistant Secretary for the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration--head of the Department of
Labor agency. An epidemiologist, he has studied exposure to toxic
chemicals, including asbestos, metals and solvents, and written

among EPA Green Power Users

The CalPortland Mojave Plant in south central California ranks fifth
among the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Top 20
On-site Green Power Users. Eight 3-megawatt wind turbines recently
erected around the Mojave site generate 50 million kilowatt-hours of
power annually, providing the cement mill 11 percent of its electricity

Feds find unfair labor practices at Kieft
Bros.

NLRB Administrative Law Judge Arthur Amchan has ordered Elmhurst,
Ill.-based precaster Kieft Brothers Inc. to reinstate nine employees who
were laid off in late 2008; reimburse them for certain lost wages and
benefits; and, recognize Teamsters Local 673 as its truck drivers’

Precasters’ Benchmarking Report confirms
double-digit business drop

NPCA member producers saw 2008 shipments drop 10 percent against the
prior year, to an estimated $27 billion in total sales volume, with
gross profit averaging 25.8 percent. While the business dip mirrors an
overall construction market decline against the larger recession, the
NPCA 2009 Benchmarking Report indicates a few areas of growth last year,
notably architectural wall panels, up 38 percent from 2007, to $1.04

ACI Superplasticizer, Sustainability
conferences converge in Spain
