Unless you live on another planet (and that planet lacks a satellite
dish), you probably heard that Michael Phelps broke Mark Spitz’
unbreakable Olympic record by winning eight gold medals. Call it “The
Great Haul of China.”

How well you close is perhaps the ultimate judge of your sales
success. But how you open has a lot to do with whether or not you get
to close at all!

Over the last decade the term duct renovation has been heard a lot
in the HVAC industry. The term refers to the process of testing,
diagnosing, repairing, and balancing duct systems. Typically, this
service is offered to a customer when a contractor proposes to replace
equipment. Let’s take a look at the process and the benefits to a
homeowner and a contractor.

Two members of RSES will participate in the ninth annual North American
Technician Excellence Certified Technician Competition at HVAC
Comfortech 2008 in Atlanta.
The two RSES members are, Ratib Baker, CMS, of the Chesapeake Chapter,
Baltimore, MD; and Greg Kristiansen, of the Southern Vermont Chapter,
Rutland, Vt.
Baker, of Electric Motor Repair Co., Baltimore, MD, has more than 30
years of experience in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and
refrigeration industry. He has held his current position for ten years
where he manages the refrigeration service department and assumes
various daily responsibilities as well as teaches various classes
including: a basic gas class three times a year; an intensive gas
apprentice training class twice a year; along with other training
classes throughout the year. He stays current with the HVACR industry
by utilizing various resources. “The primary sources I use for the
industry changes are trade magazines, manufacturer’s Web sites and
trade forums on the Internet,” explained Baker.
Kristiansen of GSK Climate Control Inc., East Dorset, Vt., has worked
full-time in the HVAC industry for 25 years. Kristiansen enjoys all
aspects of the HVAC business including system design and
troubleshooting. When asked how he keeps up with changes in the HVAC
industry, Kristiansen responded, “An instructor in college told me
that you cannot possibly know all the answers, but you should be able to
find them. The Web has made that much easier.”
The 2008 finalists were selected from thousands of HVAC technicians who
took the NATE exam in 2007 and scored in the top 1% of the 22,000 tests
given. These technicians will compete with five others selected from
more than 200 semi-finalists in the HVAC industry. The competition will
test the technological, systemic and mechanical knowledge required to
install and service today’s heating and cooling equipment. During the
competition, contestants will compete in a series of timed, hands-on
events.
Residential heating and cooling equipment and simulators will be rigged
with specific problems that require contestants to demonstrate their
problem-solving skills by analyzing, diagnosing and correcting a number
of equipment and system malfunctions. The technician who has the most
correct answers will be awarded the Top Tech title. If there is a tie
between technicians, the technician with the shortest time will be
awarded the Top Tech title.
