Okay, you showed up, did your complete diagnostic, got the order,
completed the repairs and even sold a service agreement. Things are
going well.

Here are two of the seven finalists in the NATE Certified Technician
Competition. The technicians will compete at this year’s HVAC
Comfortech conference to earn the title of “top tech”. These
technicians are the “best of the best” in the industry and have
earned their spot in the competition by scoring the highest on their
NATE certification exams. HVAC Comfortech will take place in Atlanta, GA
September 10 – 13. M
Jerry Roth
Greens Furnace & Plumbing Co.
Lincoln, NE
Jerry Roth entered the HVAC industry because he enjoys solving problems.
He’s been diagnosing and solving homeowners’ heating and cooling
problems for 22 years. Jerry became NATE certified because his employer,
Green’s Furnace & Plumbing Co., set the goal of having all of their
techs NATE certified.
Jerry believes that it’s important for technicians to commit to
ongoing training given the rapid pace of change in the industry. He also
recommends that technicians build a diverse area of expertise, by
learning how to service and install both residential and commercial
systems. Green’s Furnace & Plumbing Co. sells Lennox and Trane HVAC
systems.
Philip McManus
Oasis A/C
Fallen, NV
Some might refer to him as an HVAC veteran but for Certified Technician
Competition Finalist Philip McManus, rapid change in the industry means
new challenges and opportunities. Philip McManus has been in the HVAC
industry “officially” since 1969. However, he became interested in
the industry even earlier, growing up in a family that owned a heating
oil business. Despite his experience and tenure in the industry, Philip
believes one can never rest on his laurels. “This is a fast-moving
business and one that requires a commitment to continuous learning,”
he noted. Oasis A/C is a Lennox dealer. Philip credits Lennox with
introducing him to the value of NATE certification.

EGB 2008 is the only event dedicated exclusively to designing
greener mechanical systems for commercial/industrial/institutional
buildings. It’s the only place where you can network with green
experts who will be on hand for two days to provide information and
guidance on projects you’re currently designing.
• Jerry Yudelson has trained more than 3,300 building industry
experts in the LEED rating systems. Yudelson will present this year’s
keynote address, as well as a session on branding and positioning green
building projects.
• Valentine Lehr is a recognized industry leader, educator,
lecturer and a published engineer. Lehr will discuss how to measure and
evaluate a building’s carbon footprint.
• Bill Swan’s expertise on BACnet has earned him the nickname
“BACnet Bill.” Swan will discuss building automation in green
buildings.
• Kent Peterson is the outgoing president of ASHRAE. Peterson
will lead a session emphasizing innovation and creativity in the quest
for sustainability.
• Energy expert Mark Lentz will present on achieving net zero
