Thanks to all of the contractors who have sent questions to me. In
this issue, I’m going to address one concern that came up in email
after email – how to deliver superior service in a profitable way.
It’s an issue that we should all be thinking about, and to their
credit, the most progressive mechanical contractors focus on it every
single day. But times change, attitudes shift, your customers think
about you differently – a lot of times, you can’t figure out why. So
here are some thoughts around the most popular question I received so
far:

One of the biggest threats to the HVAC contractor is one that is
seldom given the attention that it deserves -- carbon monoxide. Unlike
other challenges faced by contractors and their technicians, inattention
to possible CO problems can lead to illness and death for their
customers and put contractors and technicians at risk.

An HVAC industry survey conducted by The Freedonia Group, Cleveland,
OH finds HVAC demand will increase by 4.5% each year, to $17 billion by
2013. The research finds advances will be driven by a projected recovery
in residential construction
from a low 2008 base.

Shaw Mechanical Services, LLC, Orlando, FL, has completed the
replacement of two centrifugal chillers and cooling towers at the
downtown Orlando main branch of the Orange County Library System, as
designed by TLC Engineering for Architecture.
The $800,000 project required a complete shut down, during which 700
tons of temporary cooling were provided, so that no loss of cooling ever
occurred to the operating facility. The new variable speed water cooled
centrifugal chillers were disassembled and re-assembled in order to get
them in the basement CEP.
