    EPA announces WaterSense urinal draft

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced its Notice of Intent to develop a draft performance standards for high-efficiency urinals.

EPA noted that there are currently an estimated 12 million urinals in the U.S. Up to 80% or 9.6 million of these urinals are inefficient units with flush volumes exceeding the current 1.0 gallon per flush maximum volume allowed by federal standards. Some of them flush a half gallon to as much as 4.5-GPF more than the existing standard.

Since the federal standards were enacted, manufacturers have developed even more efficient urinals that use significantly less water than the standard 1.0 gpf fixtures or no water at all.

QSC gears up for Milwaukee Power Meeting

FALLS CHURCH, VA. -- Quality Service Contractors, and enhanced service group of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors – National Association, is preparing for its latest power meeting, slated for July 31 – August 2 in Milwaukee.

To help QSC members identify strategies to make their businesses more successful, QSC offers two Power Meetings each year that are packed full of seminars designed especially for the p-h-c service and repair contractor. In addition to the networking that takes place at the Power Meetings, QSC also provides valuable networking through its Peer Groups. Many QSC members also bring key employees from their company. It is a great way for them to get more involved in the day-to-day running of the business. Besides that, it is always better to have more than one person attend. Have two people bring back ideas on ways to improve the business.

There is still time for interested contractors to register for the meeting, potentially for free.

State lifts ban on Waterless urinals

ST. PAUL, MINN. – Lawmakers here have lifted a statewide ban on waterless urinals initially supported by a trade group that wanted amendments to the state’s plumbing code addressing the water-saving devices.
The state enacted the legislation banning the urinals in 2007. Carl Crimmins, president of the Minnesota Pipe Trades Association, said his organization originally endorsed the ban because the state’s plumbing code did not permit the installation and operation of waterless urinals at the time.
“The manufacturers were running around trying to sell these waterless urinals in the state against what the plumbing code stated,” he said. “Nobody was addressing the issue that, even though waterless urinals are a good thing, you’ve got to change the law in order to make them legal.”
