Study
finds more contractors are purchasing power tools online

CHICAGO — CONTRACTOR’s 2009 Power Tool Study,
completed this spring, shows that the number of readers purchasing power
tools online continues to increase — 9.6% of readers purchase power
tools online, compared to 8.5% in 2007 and 7% in 2006.

may qualify for energy tax benefits
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. — At the recent seminar, Go
Green and Get Green – Understanding and Taking Advantage of the IRS
Energy Tax Benefits, here, attendees learned that contractors,
architects and engineers may qualify for energy tax benefits of $1.80
per square foot by installing new green HVAC systems and taking other
steps to improve energy efficiency.
According to IRS statistics, less than 1% of eligible owners apply for
this tax benefit.

WaterSense
specs address plumbing systems, not plumbers

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency’s
WaterSense for Homes specifications for single-family new homes were
revised this May, based on public comments and additional research,
regarding the original draft’s specifications. The recent revision
addresses efficient plumbing fixtures, hot water delivery systems and
other aspects of the original specification, but does not specify
anything about certified or qualified plumbers working on WaterSense
homes.
Once the WaterSense for Homes specification draft is finalized, it will
ensure that future WaterSense-labeled homes use 20% less water than
standard new homes while reducing builders’ costs, according to the

Energy
efficiency retrofit market gets funding
BOULDER, COLO. — The energy efficiency retrofit market
received a boost from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which
will provide substantial funding for renovations to federal buildings.
However, this segment pales in comparison to the total U.S. commercial
building market, which represents one of the largest opportunities for
energy savings, reduction of carbon emissions and increased property
values.
