Niche markets, green will be ok in 2010

    BY ROBERT P. MADER
CHICAGO — LET’S MAKE LEMONADE. The overall residential and commercial markets will range from bad to horrible in 2010. Service work and certain niche markets, especially in green work, will be ok.

During downturns, owners will put off new construction, but maintain their properties. That was not the case in 2009 when owners delayed service work, so demand for service is pent up. The green space will continue to see work, both for private owners and the government. A lot of military building construction will be green.

WESTPORT, CONN. — The latest innovations in the HVAC/R industry will not only be displayed on the show floor at the 2010 AHR Expo, Jan. 25-27, they will also be a hot topic at many of the nearly 50 free educational sessions being offered to contractors, engineers, wholesalers and other HVAC/R professionals during the three-day event at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida.

“We’re excited to have so many organizations partnering with us to conduct these popular educational sessions,” said Clay Stevens, president of International Exposition Company, which manages the AHR Expo. “It’s a great opportunity for AHR Expo attendees to gain valuable knowledge at little or no cost during this year’s show.”

DOE proposes new water heater standards

    BY ROBERT P. MADER
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Energy has proposed higher efficiency standards for gas and electric water heaters. The increases are nominal and won’t take effect until 2015, if they are finalized and promulgated. Environmentalists criticized the proposals for being too meek; they would prefer more gas condensing and electric heat pump water heaters. Water heater manufacturers, however, pointed out that DOE is constrained by law from going overboard on new efficiency standards.

The proposed rules call for gas-fired storage water heaters at or less than 60-gal. to have an Energy Factor of 0.675, while those larger than 60-gal. would have an Energy Factor of 0.717. Electric storage water heaters of 80-gal. or less would have an EF of 0.96 and those above 80-gal. would have an EF of 1.088. Oil-fired storage water heaters of all capacities would need an EF=0.68, while gas tankless units would need an EF=0.82.

WASHINGTON — Drafters of the International Code Council’s International Green Construction Code (IGCC) are nearing completion of the integrated green code for traditional and high-performance commercial buildings, set for a public release in March 2010.

“This will be the first time code officials, owners and designers will have an integrated regulatory framework to put into practice that meets the goal of greening the construction and design of new and existing buildings,” according to Code Council CEO Richard P. Weiland.
