Viega
gets ProPress approved in NYC
NEW YORK — Viega LLC is celebrating the approval of
its ProPress press fitting system in one of the nation’s last
holdouts, New York City. New York finally abandoned its 1968 plumbing
code, said Steve Fiedler, Viega’s regional manager for New York City,
and adopted the 2003 edition of the International Plumbing Code with
revisions.
The approval is for both copper and stainless steel piping. It is not
approved for gas pipe. Viega will offer fittings from ½-in. to 4-in.

calls for ‘urgent action’ on DOE proposal to limit showerheads
FALLS CHURCH, VA. — Plumbing-Heating-Cooling
Contractors – National Association is calling on its members to
strongly protest a Department of Energy proposal that would ban multiple
head showers. DOE proposes to interpret the Energy Policy and
Conservation Act of 1975, as amended, to mean that a showerhead is
anything past the mixing valve. That would mean that all fittings could
not spray more than 2.5-gpm combined

Conserving
water through education

In April I went to the Kitchen Bath and Industry Show
and IAPMO’s Green Technical Committee meeting. At both events water
was a key topic. At KBIS, 99% of the plumbing fixtures I saw at the
trade show conserved water, from toilets and showers to kitchen and bath
faucets (click here to read Contractor’s KBIS coverage). It seems to
me that most companies realize water conservation is not going away —
it’s becoming a bigger and bigger trend. Also, during the show, I
attended an industry luncheon that David Kohler, president and chief
operating officer of Kohler Co., spoke at.

Star passes House, moves to Senate
WASHINGTON — The U.S. House of Representatives passed
the Home Star Energy Retrofit Act, H.R. 5019, sponsored by
Representative Peter Welch (D-VT.), Thursday, May 6. The bill was sent
to the Senate and referred to the Committee on Finance the following
day. Its companion bill, S.B. 3177, sponsored by Senator Jeff Bingaman
(D-N.M.) was referred to the Committee on Finance March 25, 2010, and a
revised version, S.B. 3434, was introduced in the Senate May 27, 2010,
which is now being examined by the Administration, the Senate leadership
and the Senate Finance Committee. If signed into law, the bill will
provide incentives to consumers to make their homes more energy
efficient.

Star program to increase water heater criteria this fall
BOSTON — This fall, the Energy Star program will
increase the minimum Energy Factor (EF) for gas storage water heaters
from 0.62 to 0.67. The increase in criteria, which will go into effect
on Sept. 1, 2010, will bring additional 0.67 EF models to the
marketplace, offering homeowners even greater water heating efficiency.
