    The millionaire plumber next door

    BY MATT MICHEL
Has anyone noticed that most financial investments aren't doing so well? While Wall Street has recovered much of its precipitous drop following the financial meltdown, it's still not a stellar investment. And real estate? Oh boy! Good thing you've got a better investment.

Indeed, all of those Wall Street tycoons and real estate barons wish they had an investment as stable, strong, secure and controllable as you … as strong and stable as your plumbing company.

California greening: ecoPARK is a standout project

    BY CANDACE ROULO
In the October issue of Contractor, there are a handful of articles about sustainable projects in California. I wrote an article about the Cherokee Lofts, a five-story, mixed-use building that is 40% more energy efficient than California Title 24. Designed with passive strategies and a photovoltaic system, the mixed-use building is utilizing an advanced variable refrigerant flow (VRF) cooling and heating system and water conserving plumbing fixtures.

I also reported on San Jose’s Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, the first amusement park and zoo in the country to receive U.S. Green Building Council LEED Gold certification. The park just reopened this March and is utilizing sustainable systems and products to reduce water usage by 50%, potable water usage by 30%, and energy costs below the projected costs per ASHRAE and the California Title 24 energy codes.

Stronger Growth for Remodeling Seen in 2011

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Substantive growth in remodeling spending, coming off a three year decline, seems likely in 2011, according to the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) released today by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. Even though spending is still below its 2007 peak, the LIRA indicates that homeowner improvement spending is expected to be up at a double-digit pace at an annual rate through the first half of 2011.

The survey includes the responses of more than 2,100 key administrators of local governments throughout the country.
