Pa. residential fire sprinkler mandate is under attack in legislature
BY CANDACE ROULO
HARRISBURG, PA. — Last month the Pennsylvania House of Representatives approved legislation, H.B. 377, to repeal the residential fire sprinkler mandate in the state’s construction code. The bill would exclude all new one- and two-family residences from the sprinkler requirement that became part of the Uniform Construction Code, effective Jan. 1, 2011. The measure is now headed to the Pennsylvania Senate for consideration.
Pennsylvania was one of the first two states in the country to require sprinklers in every new home based on the International Code Council (ICC), mandating the installation of residential fire sprinklers in all new one- and two-family residences, including townhouses in the 2009 International Residential Code (IRC). In December 2009, the Pennsylvania Review Commission voted to adopt the IRC and its residential sprinkler requirement, updating the state’s Uniform Construction Code.

ISH Frankfurt continues to be a can’t-miss event
BY ROBERT P. MADER
Publisher Dan Ashenden and I were fortunate to attend the ISH Frankfurt show in Frankfurt, Germany, in mid-March. I’ll cover the show itself extensively in the April issue of CONTRACTOR magazine and on www.contractormag.com, but I have some general impressions and reflections here.
Gas runs about €1.60 per liter. That’s approximately $2.22 per liter or about $9.38 per gallon. That’ll get you onto the train, won’t it? The trains are great, clean and on time. Dan and I rode the train to Rudesheim, about an hour west of Frankfurt. The trains (at least the ones I saw first-hand) are electric, using overhead wires. Even the freight trains.

Proper usage of the standard pipe wrench
BY CHUCK STEVENS
When it comes to having the right tools for the job, no toolbox or tool corral is complete without a standard, straight, heavy-duty pipe wrench. A tool designed to grip and rotate cylindrical material appears very simple on the exterior but peel back the covers and it becomes apparent that a lot of thought went into the engineering of this tool. The pipe wrench has changed over its 140-year history, but the current design of today has remained virtually the same for the past 90 years.
