Harvest enters final
stage
With November's arrival, harvest is in its final stage across much
of the country. In the reports below, the managers of F.I.R.S.T.
(Farmer's Independent Research of Seed Technologies) provide a weekly
snapshot of how corn and soybeans are yielding. These managers conduct
on-farm research trials from farms just like yours. Take a look at their
area's summaries and then click on the reports in blue to see exact

F.I.R.S.T. CORN PROGRESS REPORT
Iowa East Central, Iowa West
Central and Iowa North West Chris Clark
The Sully, IA, field was a third year corn-on-corn
location. Despite a highly variable growing season, the plot grew well.
An August windstorm caused some root lodging, but the corn was fully
harvestable, so the data is reliable. The average yields were 195.9
bu./acre and 192.2 bu./acre for the early and full-season tests,
respectively.

Wet soil conditions at planting were a concern at the Liscomb, IA, plot.
Plant emergence was a little uneven and stayed that way for the early
part of the growing season. Eventually, the plants evened up and
produced a good yield. The early season test averaged 199.6 bu./acre.
The full-season test had an average yield of 192.6 bu./acre.

Weather was a factor affecting yields at the Washington, IA, field. The
plot was wet at planting, then very dry for a month before conditions
turned excessively wet again. Heavy corn rootworm beetle feeding was
also noted at this location. Average yields were 182.7 bu./acre and
177.3 bu./acre for the early and full-season tests, respectively.

The Oskaloosa, IA, field had a good growing season with adequate
moisture. Plants grew very tall. Average yields were 211.4 bu./acre and
214.8 bu./acre for the early and full-season tests, respectively.

Excellent planting conditions and good emergence helped produce an
exceptional crop at the Luverne, IA, field. The crop grew well most of
the season with minimal stress, and standability was deemed perfect.
Average yields were 206.4 bu./acre and 217.4 bu./acre for the early and
full-season tests, respectively. This location also had an ultra-early
test which had an average yield of 202.8 bu./acre.

Despite an extremely wet spring at the Slater, IA, location, the plants
emerged and developed fairly well. Average yields were 183.8 bu./acre
for the early season test and 188.2 bu./acre for the full-season test.

Planting conditions were ideal at the Paullina, IA, field. The crop grew
well with minimal stress until conditions turned dry in late June and
stayed hot and dry through July. Rains finally came in early August, but
some yield potential was already reduced. Average yields were 181.9
bu./acre and 176.7 bu./acre for the early and full-season tests,
respectively. This location also had an ultra-early test which had an
average yield of 173.7 bu./acre.

Plants emerged well and stands were good at the Missouri Valley, IA,
field. Following a wet spring, conditions turned hot and dry through
July. August rains helped restart the crop and save yields. Average
yields were 163.1 bu./acre and 158.1 bu./acre for the early and
full-season tests, respectively.

Minnesota West Central Rick Querna
Wet soils delayed planting until May 15 at the Clinton, MN,
plot. The field had good emergence and early growth, but experienced dry
conditions from late June through early August. Good fall rains helped
finish the crop. Average yield was 184.4 bu./acre and 189.7 bu./acre on
the early season and full-season tests, respectively.

At the Litchfield, MN, plot, growing conditions were good until the
weather turned dry in June. Continued heat and dry conditions in July
stressed the crop. Late July wind, along with heavy corn rootworm
pressure, caused some root lodging. Average yield was 153.6 bu./acre and
156.7 bu./acre on the early season and full-season tests, respectively.

The Granite Falls, MN, location had optimum spring weather and moisture.
Drier conditions prevailed from mid-June through early August. Then,
welcome rains in August helped boost yields. Average yield was 185.5
bu./acre on the early season test and 176.6 bu./acre on the full-season
test.

Wet conditions delayed planting until May 20 at the
Madison, NE, site. In the past, dryland corn yields have been as high as
190 bu./acre here. However, this year the late planting and early soggy
conditions lowered yields here. The average yield was 144.1 bu./acre on
the early season site and 147.3 bu./acre on the full-season site.

Excess moisture after planting caused plant stress at the Mission Hill,
SD, location. The end of June and most of July were drier with
above-average temperatures. The average yield was 181.8 bu./acre on the
early season site and 175 bu./acre on the full-season site.

Wet weather until mid-May delayed planting at the Howard and Madison,
SD, locations. But good conditions during most of the growing season
helped the corn produce a respectable yield potential at both sites. At
Howard, the average yield was 173.9 bu./acre on the early season site
and 175.5 bu./acre on the full-season site.

At the Madison, SD, location, the average yield was 200.3 bu./acre on

Lack of rain most of the summer reduced the yield potential at the
Trent, SD, location. The average yield was 182.3 bu./acre on the early

The Clear Lake, SD, test produced exceptional average yields of 203.3
bu./acre on the early season site and 206.4 bu./acre on the full-season

Wet conditions at planting, followed by weed pressure, reduced the yield
potential at the Hazel, SD, location. The average yield was 117.1
bu./acre on the early season site and 112.7 bu./acre on the full-season

Wet conditions at planting were a challenge at the Webster, SD,
location. Results from the early season test were rejected because of
difficulty in getting all of the test replications planted. However, the
full-season test did well and had an average yield of 139.2 bu./acre.

July rain helped produce an above-average yield at the Milbank, SD,
location. The average yield was 185.9 bu./acre on the early season site
and 189.2 bu./acre on the full-season site.

The Bath, SD, location experienced variable weather through the growing
season, but the site finished well. The average yield was 202 bu./acre
on the early season site and 195.5 bu./acre on the full-season site.

Fourteen in. of rain in early May caused severe flooding at the Cavour,
SD, location. The rains continued after planting and the early season
test was lost. The results of the full-season test were also seriously
affected by the excess rain. The average yield was 86.5 bu./acre on the
full-season site.

Soil conditions were good after rains in April and early May at the
Beresford, SD, site. Rains continued until June 2, but then ceased
completely until Aug. 2. The drought took its toll and at harvest yield
range was 0-30 bu./acre. Thus, this location was deemed a crop failure
due to the drought, and no results are being reported for 2007.

Plants were standing well and stalk quality was
good at harvest on Oct. 26 at the Miles, IA, field. Average yield was
197.9 bu./acre on the early season test and 214.4 bu./acre on the
full-season test.

The Oregon, WI, plot started with good moisture at planting on May 1.
However, very little rain fell in July, which impacted ear development
and fill. As a result, average yield was only 144.3 bu./acre on the
early season test and 128.4 bu./acre on the full-season test.

The Belleville, IL, site had excellent plant
growth. Average yield was 56.7 bu./acre.

August heat produced medium plant heights and reduced seed sizes to very
small at both the Vandalia and Du Quoin, IL, locations. As a result,
average yield was only 25.2 bu./acre and 26.7 bu./acre, respectively.

The average yield of 60.4 bu./acre was surprising at the
Elkhorn, WI, location given the lack of rainfall in July. August rains
were plentiful which helped with pod set. Plant heights were relatively
tall, which caused some lodging.

The Winnebago, IL, field had good rainfall most of the season, which
helped produce a respectable average yield of 68.9 bu./acre. Plant
heights were all tall, causing some lodging.

Field conditions produced a nice yield of 68 bu./acre at the
Farmersburg, IA, field. Soybeans showed no sign of disease, and all
varieties were standing well at harvest on Oct. 29.

The Letts, IA, field had heavy grass pressure for the first four weeks
after planting and did not get spray until the middle of June. The
average yield of 54.8 bu./acre was better than expected.

The presence of aphids early in the growing season may have hurt yields
slightly at the Warren, IL, field. The average yield was 54.3 bu./acre.

The Spring Green, WI, location was irrigated, which helped the crop
during the hot and dry weather in June and July. Plants were short and
had lots of pods/cluster. The average yield was 62 bu./acre.

Good rains in August helped produce nice yields at the Lancaster, WI,
field. The average yield was 60.3 bu./acre. Plants were tall and
experienced some lodging.

The Watertown, WI, plot had no rain in June and July, but August rains
helped save the crop. The average yield was 46.6 bu./acre. There were
not many pods/clusters.

Spring rains provided good moisture at planting at the
Trent, SD, plot. Although June and July were dry, light rains in August
helped boost yields. However, an early frost on Sept. 14 took some toll
on the yield. The site averaged 47.6 bu./acre.

Early season moisture was good at the Howard, SD, plot. A hard frost
mid-September cut the season short, but the soybeans were mostly mature
by then. The site's average yield was 52.6 bu./acre.
