Audio and video reports new
addition this year
Welcome to the 2008 F.I.R.S.T. Harvest Reports brought to you by
Corn & Soybean Digest magazine with sponsorship from Bayer
CropScience. For the next 10 weeks, you'll receive this e-newsletter
providing corn, soybean and silage summaries from the harvest trail.
The data used to compile these summaries is collected by the managers of
F.I.R.S.T. (Farmer's Independent Research of Seed Technologies). The
F.I.R.S.T. Harvest Reports are designed to provide real-world,
independent data on corn and soybean yield performance. The F.I.R.S.T.
seed-testing program was established by Agronomic Seed Consulting, Inc.
(AgSCI) in 1997. Farmer members work with F.I.R.S.T. managers to
generate independent seed product data.
F.I.R.S.T. plots are grown with the same crop inputs and management
techniques the member uses. Each hybrid is tested three times in
four-row strips; only the center two rows are used to determine yield.
Tests are conducted on corn and soybean hybrids and varieties at plots
throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin,
Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska.
To view the full reports with the listing of each hybrid visit www.firstseedtests.com. The
site is newly redesigned and easy to navigate to find the most recent
reports, information by region and archives of reports from previous
years.
New to the Web site this year are the FIRST Videos, which feature clips
with the director of F.I.R.S.T. Kevin Coey and Mark Querna, who is the
western and northwestern Corn Belt Manager. Look for the link in the
text below to go directly to these video clips.
Additionally, audio interviews will be added to the F.I.R.S.T. website
each week featuring comments from the managers about field conditions
and harvest progress. Access this week's audio interviews through the
link listed in the text below.
This week there are only a handful of harvest reports to share, as
weather has greatly delayed the 2008 harvest. Click on the reports in
blue to see complete harvest information from on-farm tests.

As the No. 1 seed-applied insecticide, Poncho has more repeat users
on more acres than all other seed-applied insecticides combined, and for
good reason:
Poncho 250-treated seed has yielded an average
of more than 6 bu/A over fungicide only-treated seed across
1,427 repetitive trials.
Poncho 1250-treated seed has
yielded an average of 13.1 bu/A more than fungicide only-treated
seed across 1,963 repetitive trials.

F.I.R.S.T. CORN PROGRESS REPORT
Illinois North Jason Beyers
Soil with tremendous water-holding capacity
helps make this an excellent site at Grand Ridge, IL. However, lack of
rainfall in August limited the yield potential of this field. The use of
a fungicide resulted in most of the varieties still having green leaves
at harvest. The site averaged 230.5 bu./acre on the early season test.
Grand
Ridge, IL - Early Season Test
Iowa West Central Chris Clark
The Missouri Valley, IA, location was planted April 23 and
grew well all season. The plot posted an average yield of 220.2 bu./acre
on the early season test, with the full season hybrids seeming to
out-perform the earlier hybrids at this location this year.
Missouri
Valley, IA – Early Season Test
The Lewis, IA, site was a new test location in 2007. The field received
plenty of rain during the 2008 season. The crop was harvested wet as the
cooperator was harvesting the same field for high-moisture cattle feed
and wanted to compare field and plot yields on the same basis. The early
season test yielded 229.8 bu./acre.
Lewis,
IA – Early Season Test
Ohio West Central Rich Schleuning
The Springfield, OH, field had great planting conditions
and good emergence to produce a nice final stand. Weather conditions
were dry in July. Thus, plants put all effort into grain fill, which
reduced stalk quality. High winds before harvest caused substantial
lodging. The early season test had an average yield of of only 102.6
bu./acre.

Trilex® 6000 Soybean System from Bayer CropScience can help
growers manage part of the time puzzle: researching and deciding
seed-applied soybean inputs.
Trilex 6000 Soybean System combines the technologies of Trilex, Yield
Shield and Allegiance® seed-applied fungicides; Celgard;
Gaucho® seed-applied insecticide; and Pro-Ized Red Colorant in one
seed treatment. These products combine to protect against detrimental
insects and fungi including overwintering bean leaf beetle, soybean
aphids, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Pythium and early season
Phytophthora.

F.I.R.S.T. SOYBEAN PROGRESS REPORT
USDA provides harvest
statistics
The U.S. corn crop is 96% dented and 52% at a mature state,
according to a report this week by USDA.
This is behind the crop's five-year average. According to USDA
statistics, the dented stage is on average 98% for this week of the
year, while the average crop maturity for this time of year is 79%.
Likewise, corn harvest is behind the historical average of 21% complete
by this week of the year. Currently, only 9% of corn harvest is being
reported as done.
USDA says soybean states also report 9% of the harvest completed against
and average of 21% for this time of year.
