Harvest Underway Early For
2007
Harvest got an early start across the country this year. For the
next eight weeks, the managers of F.I.R.S.T. (Farmer's Independent
Research of Seed Technologies) will provide a weekly snapshot of how
corn and soybeans are yielding. These managers conduct on-farm research
trials from farms just like yours. Take a look at their area's summaries
and then click on the reports in blue to see exact harvest information

F.I.R.S.T. CORN PROGRESS REPORT

Central, and Illinois East Central

 Both planted on April 29, the two Virden, IL,
plots posted fantastic yields with an average of 219.1 bu./acre for the
early-season test and 216.6 bu./acre for the full-season test. Rainfall
at this site was considered spotty during the growing season. Although
stalk lodging was not prevalent, pinch tests by hand revealed numerous
hybrid's stalks were weakening at harvest. A site was also planted at
the Virden, IL, location to test hybrids that are not
genetically-resistant to rootworm beetles. Average yields there were
203.2 bu./acre.

Despite only 5.5 in. of rainfall from planting April 28 to Aug. 1, the
Findlay, IL, early- and full-season tests posted respectable average
yields of 188.3 bu./acre and 191.8 bu./acre, respectively. Corn rootworm
levels are high at this site, which resulted in lodging scores above
20%. A site was also planted at the Findlay, IL, location to test
hybrids that are not genetically-resistant to rootworm beetles. Average
yields there were 164.3 bu./acre.

Average yields at the Jewett, IL, location were 160.9 bu./acre for the
early-season test and 158.0 bu./acre for the full-season test. This is
one of two F.I.R.S.T. sites in Southern Illinois for corn-on-corn
results.

The Salem, IL, early- and full-season tests posted below-average yields
of 84.3 bu./acre and 96.7 bu./acre, respectively. After planting, the
site had a near perfect emergence and stand. However, limited rainfall
and the August heat were blamed for the low yields.

The Flora, IL, early- and full-season tests posted average yields of
162.4 bu./acre and 131.2 bu./acre, respectively. The field experienced
relentless heat in the month of August which caused grain moistures to
plummet below 15% at this location. Corn borer infestation was also
noted as a problem at the site.

Harvested Sept. 13, the Du Quoin, IL, site had a below-average yield of
81.7 bu./acre for the early-season test and 54.0 bu./acre for the
full-season test. While stands were very good, the plot only received 1
in. of rain in June, 0.5 in. during July and 0.3 in. in August. Some
hybrid's plants did not develop an ear, which was attributed to the
heat. Kernel size was also very small for the site.

A late-planting date of May 20 may have contributed to
lower-than-average yields at the Belleville, IL, location. The early-
and full-season tests posted average yields of 173.1 bu./acre and 177.7
bu./acre, respectively. Farmer John Barttelbort noted that most of his
earlier planted corn in the area was yielding in the 200 bu./acre range.
Overall, this site had very tall plant and ear heights.

Harvested Sept. 4, the Forsyth, IL, site yielded an impressive average
of 211.6 bu./acre for the early-season test and 215.4 bu./acre for the
full-season test. In contrast to previous years, corn borer infestation
was not evident at this site.

Ear development at the Vandalia, IL, location suffered due to the August
heat and limited rainfall. Average yields were 99 bu./acre and 86
bu./acre, respectively, for the early- and late-season plots.

The Athens, IL, site had excellent grain quality and kernel depth,
thanks to timely rains from April through August. The early-season test
had an average yield of 213.0 bu./acre, while the full-season test
posted an average of 218.5 bu./acre.

Limited rainfall in June and ample heat in August are believed to have
reduced yields 20-30 bu./acre at the Tremont, IL, site. Leaf diseases
also appeared abundant at this site this year. Average yield was 197.9
bu./acre on the early-season test and 174.4 bu./acre on the full-season
test. A site was also planted at the Tremont, IL, location to test
hybrids that are not genetically resistant to rootworm beetles. Average
yields there were 207.0 bu./acre.

 Good rainfall and heat in August helped to fill
the ears and kernels out nicely at the Grand Ridge, IL, site. However,
by harvest on Sept. 13, stalk rot was becoming a concern. This site
averaged 227.7 bu./acre on the early-season test and 230.9 bu./acre on
the full-season test.

 The Huntingburg, IN, field was planted May 9 and harvested
Sept. 10. Average yield was 170.1 bu./acre, which was considered good
for the rainfall this location received during the growing season. Stalk
rot was present due to the hot and dry weather in July and August.

The Holland, IN, location received rain at the right time to boost the
average yield to 218.1 bu./acre. Emergence in the field, however, was
uneven.

The Folsomville, IN, location produced a fantastic average yield of
246.8 bu./acre. Plant health was good and there were no stalk quality
issues.

risen to the top again this harvest. In southern Illinois, growers used

produced outstanding results of 264.3 to 271.9 bushels per acre.
