More on Benjamin Button’s
Visual Effects from Digital Domain
In last week’s HD Focus, Ed Ulbrich, Digital
Domain executive producer for visual effects on David Fincher’s The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button, discussed that company’s role in
helping Fincher build his digital filmmaking pipeline for the movie.
This issue, we continue the discussion with a conversation between
Millimeter Senior Editor Michael Goldman and Digital Domain’s
visual effects supervisor on Benjamin Button—Eric Barba. Barba
explains the project’s use of digital cameras for visual effects
plates and gives his views on the issues and trends in the industry
regarding the role and future of digital cameras for making high-end
visual effects.

Cinevate Brevis35, Part 2
Assembly
Let’s start with a look at the assembled unit. On the right is the
base Canon XH A1, with the lens hood off and the Brevis with Flip Module
attached. On the extreme left is the 35mm Canon lens, and the entire rig
is sitting on and supported by the 45cm rails system. Pretty sweet.
Of course, assembly is just the first stage, albeit an important one.
Beyond this are the three stages of configuring the unit, or alignment,
focusing the camcorder, and collimation. Let’s take this one item at a
time (and yes, there will be a test).
Alignment
Step 1 is alignment. Essentially, you’re screwing a tube to the end of
your camcorder, and then shooting through the tube. If it isn’t
properly aligned, you won’t get the optimal results. As I mentioned in
the first article, you attach the Brevis Flip Module to your camcorder
via four set screws in a ring that sits outside your camcorder’s lens,
similar to how you would attach a lens hood or matte box. more>>

AJA Offers Unique 1080 VFR
Support for the Canon XH G1S with Software Version 6.0.2 for Io HD, KONA
3 and KONA LHe
AJA Video Systems, a leading manufacturer of
professional video interface and conversion solutions, recently released
version 6.0.2 software for the AJA Io HD, KONA 3 and KONA LHe products.
With version 6.0.2, AJA has added support for the extraction of 23.98
fps video from a 1080i 29.97 fps HD-SDI signal. It is important to note
that not all models of camcorders with 1080i 29.97 HD-SDI output provide
the flagged frame data needed for the proper operation of this feature.
The newly introduced Canon XH G1S camcorder, with 1080i29.97 HD-SDI
output, provides the necessary flagged frame data. When working with the
camera in the 24F frame rate mode, the camera can be configured to
output flagged frame data so that the Io HD or KONA 3/LHe can locate the
frames needed for removal, resulting in native 24F video files. more>>
