NTT Photonics Laboratories unveiled a new optical fiber that functions as both multimode and single-mode fiber, thereby eliminating the need for expensive upgrades and reducing fiber management and ownership costs.

Until now, businesses have had to choose between single-mode and multimode optical fiber for their data transmission and data center needs. However, the dramatic growth in higher-bandwidth connections and transmissions for voice, data, and video from both business and consumers has caused many cable providers, carriers, and data centers to exceed the capacity of their multimode optical fiber. As a result, many have had to invest in major system upgrades to the faster, more expensive single-mode optical fiber system in order to support escalating demands. more>>

U.S. FTTH Connections Continue to Accelerate

The number of U.S. homes receiving video, Internet, and voice services over direct fiber-optic connections has doubled over the past year, reveals a new report sponsored by the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council and the Telecommunications Industry Association.

According to the study, 1.34 million homes are now connected to the Internet via end-to-end fiber, with fiber now passing 7.9 million homes. more>>

Worldwide PON Market Almost $1 Billion in 2006

Worldwide PON equipment sales sequentially grew 12 percent in the fourth quarter of 2006 and 71 percent for the full year, reaching $308 million and $965 million, respectively, says Infonetics Research in its latest "PON and FTTH Equipment and Subscribers" report.

EPON and GPON sales are growing rapidly, with GPON equipment revenue and ports forecast to grow at triple-digit five-year compound annual growth rates between 2006 and 2010, Infonetics says. more>>
