AV over Fiber Top Story
Increasingly Strict Environmental Regs Affect AV Fiber Applications

Applications of fiber optics in video-intensive settings, a major source of potential growth for AV integrators working with clients in many industries, also bring integrators in touch with a growing range of environmental protection issues and initiatives.

"Globally, the high-tech industry has experienced a significant shift in the approach to potentially hazardous materials commonly used in the electronics and high-tech manufacturing," Timbercon notes on its website. In these international terms, probably the single biggest impetus to electronic industries in general to pay more attention to environmental issues was the European Economic Community's promulgation of the Reduction of Hazardous Substances regulations, commonly known as ROHS. more>>

Polycom Unveils HD Continuous Presence Conferencing with Full Transcoding on RMX 2000

Polycom has announced an engineering breakthrough for the recently released RMX 2000 realtime media conferencing platform that will deliver true high-definition (HD) continuous presence conferencing with full transcoding on the existing RMX 2000 media processing module hardware.

The feature, delivered with RMX 2000 Version 2.0 software, enables customers to combine videoconferencing endpoints with different resolutions (HD, standard definition (SD) and common intermediate format resolution (CIF)) within the same call, showing multiple sites simultaneously (continuous presence) and providing optimal resolution and call quality for each participant based on the capabilities of their video system.

NASA Upgrades with Opticomm

NASA has chosen Opticomm fiber-optic communication systems in the yearlong video surveillance system upgrade at its Wallops Island, Va., facility, which is around 90 miles from Norfolk, Va. This project will allow NASA to have video surveillance along all its operating areas and allow remote range control from various facilities.

Once complete, NASA will have an enhanced, more reliable and flexible surveillance system. Using Opticomm fiber-optic systems, NASA will be able to use a single fiber, rather than multiple fibers, to transmit audio, video, and data in almost all cases. more>>

MRV Debuts High-definition Video Transceivers

MRV Communications, a leading provider of products and services for out-of-band networking, WDM and optical transport, metro Ethernet, fiber-optic components, 10GE, and other service-aware networking products, has announced a new family of digital video fiber-optic transceivers that allow transport of uncompressed high-definition video over standard fiber-optic networks.

The new Digital Video SFP family enables postproduction facilities and rich-media studios to transport HD-SDI video over dark fiber using networking gear from any vendor that supports the small-form-factor pluggable (SFP) standard.

One market opportunity is to allow postproduction facilities to share uncompressed baseband HD and SD video throughout a metropolitan area, a possibility now under consideration at Broadway Video. more>>

Corning Cable Systems Intros UniCam Pretium Connector Family

Corning Cable Systems, part of Corning's telecommunications segment, has expanded its field-installable UniCam connector product line to include the UniCam Pretium-Performance connectors.

Corning Cable Systems' UniCam connectors are no-epoxy, no-polish connectors that install quickly and easily in the field with a single no-consumables tool kit.

Broadata Communications Unveils 1800 Series to Construct Do-It-Yourself Optical Switches

Broadata Communications (BCI) introduces a new 1800 Series that can turn an electrical NxN matrix switch into an optical matrix switch using optical-electrical and electrical-optical (OE and EO) conversion. The 1800 model is a high-performance fiber-optic serial digital data converter system, specifically designed to convert serial digital optical signals into serial digital electrical signals, and vice versa. As a result, the 1800 Series provides protocol-independent digital OE and EO signal conversion to transform copper-based NxN matrix electrical switches into fiber-based optical switches. more>>
