Mail Stream: A Report on
Incoming Direct Mail
By ParadyszMatera and Direct Newsline
Cheryl & Co. Celebrates St. Patrick's Day
The cover of the 36-page St. Patrick's Day 2007 catalog from Cheryl &
Co. features a specialty gift plate with colorful Buttercream Frosted
Shamrock Cut-Out cookies.
In addition to this Collector's Edition St. Patrick's Day Dessert
Plate ($32.95), the holiday offerings continue well into the book, with
items ranging from the Lucky St. Patrick's Day Hat with 14 cookies
($21.95) to the St. Patty's Party Gift Tower ($99.95). In addition, the
book contains gift selections and items for other occasions such as
birthdays, baby showers and themed treats like Cookies for a Cure (16
for $29.95, 24 for $39.95). These heart-shaped, pink-frosted cookies
come decorated with pink bows to support the fight against breast
cancer, and 10% from the sale of each box is donated to the Arthur G.
James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at Ohio
State University. Free shipping is available on all towers and select
gifts, and Cheryl & Co. offers free shipping to all APO/FPO military
bases. The Irish Gift Bag filled with 12 shamrock cookies sells for
$19.95 on its own, but it is also offered as a premium for orders over
$125. Orders may be placed by mail, phone, or online.
Nashville Zoo Asks Donors to Get Behind Appeal
The Nashville Zoo recently mailed a promotion that solicits donations
not with cuddly faces of charming critters, but with playful photos
focusing on the rear ends of the zoo's animal inhabitants.
The outer panel of the 5-3/4" x 8-1/2" selfmailer features the
posterior of a zebra, standing in a field of bright green grass along
the bottom of the mailing. Fully opened, copy in yellow asks donors to,
"Get Behind Your Zoo." The zebra's behind is featured again, in a line
of animal backsides that includes a giraffe, elephant, cheetah, skunk,
and a bright blue macaw seated on the shell of a tortoise -- according
to the piece, just a few of the nearly 1,500 creatures that call
Nashville Zoo home. Clever copy states, "Even though we're at the tail
end of a busy season, the Zoo is open year-round...362 days a year!
There is not time to sit on our hindquarters..." A third panel doubling
as the return envelope entitled "On the Backside..." features
development plans for another 100 acres at the "rear" of the Zoo
grounds. The reply form located on the back of the selfmailer gives
donors a chance to declare, "I'm behind you, Nashville Zoo!" The ask
ladder is set at $25/$50/$75/$100/$250/other, with each level of giving
assigned a special title: $25 (Tail Feathers), $75 (Fanny Pack) or $250
(Head Hauncho). Recipients are encouraged to donate by using the reply
envelope, or online at NashvilleZoo.org.
Smith & Hawken Brings the Garden Indoors
Multichannel gardening retailer Smith & Hawken encourages recipients to
"Bring the Garden Indoors" in a recent catalog that spotlights a white
tulip on the cover.
The 7-1/4" x 6" piece is smaller than the standard 10-1/2" x 8"
catalogs that Smith & Hawken typically mails, and at 24 pages it is also
shorter than past efforts. Inside, the copy entices, "...While your
garden may be resting beneath its frosty blanket, there are still
countless ways to enjoy green, growing things in your home." Helpful
tips follow under the heading "Now is the time to:" including "Plant a
terrarium," "Hang a wreath of spring blossoms," and "Brighten your walls
with art inspired by the garden." A two-page spread showcases simple
product-pairing suggestions in the form of a series of mathematical
sums. The decorative combinations are intended to demonstrate how
recipients can enjoy nature right in their own homes. The chart
suggests, for example, "Wire and Steel Flame Urn ($39) + Zygopetalum
($39) + Reindeer Moss ($12) =" the finished creation. Other offerings,
such as a collection of terrariums and stands for growing and displaying
plant life include a White Arch Standing Terrarium ($239) and Five-tier
Tower Stand ($189). Orders can be placed by mail, phone, fax or
online.
The direct mail promotions appearing in Mail Stream are tracked and
analyzed by ParadyszMatera, a media brokerage services company, through
its MarketRelevance(tm) Promotion Library. Click here to visit their

Letters to the Editor
[Re: Loose Cannon: The Envelope, Please, Direct Newsline, March 12,
2007, (directmag.com/loosecannon/loose-cannon-envelope-please-031207/)]
What a killjoy you are to say you don't like awards shows! You probably
don't like being the recipient of Chinese water torture, either.
On the rare occasion when my TV is tuned in to a "network" and there is
an awards show on, I don't know
1) the stars
2) the shows/movies
3) the hosts
And I realize that I am missing nothing by being ignorant in these
categories because I am busy going through my snail mail, reading
magazines, or worse, writing.
Not that I have an opinion.

Thank you so much for those inspiring examples of great DM creative.
They remind me of something I recently read about one of today's leading
industrial designers. When asked how he managed to so consistently think
outside the box, he replied, "There is no box." His remark, and your
column, remind us how vital it is to start fresh, and not let our
thinking be limited by tired traditions and "proven" formulas.

I was surprised to read that the so many Caples awards went to the
Belgian agency and other overseas entries. The reason might be that all
of us in this country are using and repeating the same winning
techniques that we've learned from trade shows, books, and success
stories in the trade media. We are often copycats, for many good
reasons, but we don't win awards."
