Google Q1 Exceeds
Expectations Again
By Brian Quinton
Internet search engine and ad network Google reported that
first-quarter profits rose 69% over the same period last year -- a
result that CEO Eric Schmidt said made the company "ecstatic."
Quarterly revenue, mostly from ad sales on Google search results pages
and on its AdSense publisher network, was $2.53 billion, up from $1.53
billion in Q1 2006. Revenue on Google-owned sites increased 76% from a
year ago to $2.28 billion. AdSense revenue was $1.35 billion for the
quarter, a 45% jump year over year.
Paid clicks on Google sites and on ad network partner sites increased
about 52% over the same quarter last year.
Schmidt stressed that, despite all the attention being paid to Google's
efforts to diversify its revenue streams into offline ads, desktop
applications and the like, the company's core business of search
advertising has plenty of growth left.
"Sometimes I worry we spend so much time talking about new things, and
we're not focused on our core business, which is very strong," he said
in a conference call. "There's still lots of room for growth in Internet
ads."
Asked why Google, which has essentially made the market in targetable
search advertising, was now interested enough in online display ads to
pay $3.1 billion for the DoubleClick graphical ad delivery platform,
co-founder Sergey Brin said that the company saw large inefficiencies in
display advertising that could benefit from its targeted approach.
"At the face of it, you would think, 'Well, how complicated can it be?'"
he said. "You just pick a good site for your ads and you just run them.
But in fact, it turns out that there are many different Web sites, and
there are many different users who use those Web sites in their
different situations.
"Advertisers in many cases don't have all the metrics information they
need to decide which ads to run where. We have seen good success with
that, and we think we can expand that to more broad kinds of media, not
just static images."

Experian to Buy Web Tracker
Hitwise
Experian Group Ltd., the credit bureau and database marketing
services firm, will acquire Web research agency Hitwise for $240
million.
New York-based Hitwise accumulates and analyzes Internet usage data and
uses that analysis to target the interactive marketing efforts of its
1200 clients. The Hitwise platform collects data on keyword searches,
page views and other information for about 25 million consumers through
agreements with Internet service providers.
Companies can use the data to benchmark their Web performance against
competitors and the industry standard in market share, time on site per
visitor, and visitor profiles. Advertisers can use the data to optimize
online search marketing and ad delivery.
Dublin-based Experian gathers and offers consumer behavior and
preference data to help advertisers target campaigns. The company's
Marketing Solutions division includes Experian Marketing Services,
e-mail agency CheetahMail, and Simmons Market Research.
Earlier this month Experian issued a warning about weakness in some of
its business units due to a downturn in the subprime lending market. The
affected units included its credit-checking business both in the U.S.
and in the U.K., and its American interactive division, which includes
LowerMyBills.com, a Web site that lets consumers shop for loan rates and
financial services.
On April 3, Rival Web-tracking firm comScore filed for an initial public
offering and reportedly anticipates raising $85 million from its stock
issue.

Potter Defends Contract Delivery,
Pledges No Layoffs
The U.S. Postal Service must explore broadening contract delivery
services as a way to cut costs, Postmaster General Jack Potter told a
Senate panel Thursday.
In testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on federal financial
management, Potter defended the USPS'S consideration of further
outsourcing some of its delivery operations under the new Postal
Accountability and Enhancement Act, which calls for rate caps or the
first time.
"With postage rates linked to inflation under the new postal law,
contracting out remains an effective and necessary tool to help us
manage costs to achieve this mandate," Potter said. " Yet I believe
achieving productivity gains in the delivery function can limit the
growth of contracted delivery work.
"We understand the concerns any labor organization would have with
outsourcing. But it is not our intention to take existing work away from
our letter carriers, nor is it our intention to lay off any carriers,"
Potter continued. "That is something I pledge not to do."
