Consultant: DM Generates $371 Billion in Insurance Premiums
A 14% increase in premiums is projected this year from insurance policies sold via direct marketing, according JCG Group Ltd., an insurance and financial services consulting group.

"We're estimating that for 2007 we'll end up with in force premiums attributable to direct marketing (will be) $371 billion," said in a statement Donald R Jackson, chairman of JCG Group.

Roughly $325 billion in insurance premiums were generated through direct marketing in 2006, based on JCG's research. This includes direct mail, Web pages, telemarketing, television, radio and other direct response media.

In 2006, Geico alone mailed 860 million pieces, which resulted in $11 billion worth of premiums for the company, according to JCG Group.

Hitwise Service Tracks Online Shopping Data
Hitwise Pty. Ltd. has launched a Web-based retail data center for tracking online shopping trends and data. It tracks data in such categories as electronics and apparel, among others.

Information is gathered from more than 20,000 e-commerce Web sites, across 21 shopping categories. Findings are based on the online usage and search behavior of more than 10 million consumers.

Areas being tracked include the top 20 most visited Web sites and the top 10 keywords for searches.

Hinman to Join Epsilon Data Services
Donald P. Hinman will join Epsilon Data Services as senior VP for product development in data services. He will report directly to Brian Rainey, president of Epsilon data management. Hinman will work out of the company's Lafayette, CO office.

Hinman was most recently executive VP for product development at Naperville, IL-based Allant Group, a position he held for two years. Before joining Allant, he was group leader for InfoBase products at Acxiom Corp. between 1994 and 2005. He also held positions with NDL Lifestyle Selector.

The new position will allow Hinman to reclaim his mantle of "Dr. Data", a nickname he earned over the years as a result of his work in aggregating data sources and combining them into new offerings.

As part of his position with Epsilon Data Services, Hinman plans to combine demographic and behavioral data into a continuous look at consumer transactional behavior -- how people have gone through life stage changes, and how that affects their buying behavior -- rather than the static approach offered by recency, frequency and monetary analysis.

Hinman also serves as chair of the operating committee of the Direct Marketing Association's Ethics Policy Committee.

    Short Cuts
Experian Inc. has introduced Totalvue Retail, a new database for tracking multi-channel customer behavior. It integrates data to measure return on investment and generate other kinds of reports.

Bebe Stores Inc. has selected ICrossing to serve as its search engine-marketing agency of record. The agency will be responsible for developing and implementing campaigns to drive sales, in addition to handling campaign analysis.
