1. NFPA Report Reveals Sharp Drop in Firefighter Fatalities in 2009

For the first time in 3 years, the number of on-the-job firefighter deaths in the United States has dropped below 100, according to the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) newly released annual Firefighter Fatality Report.

2. Michaels Identifies Oil Spill Cleanup Safety Concerns, BP Response Deficiencies

In a May 25 memo to Admiral Thad Allen, the National Incident Commander for the Gulf Coast oil spill, OSHA Administrator David Michaels expressed concern “over significant deficiencies in BP’s oil spill response operations related to worker safety” and outlined problem areas ranging from inadequate site control practices to heat stress risks and more.

A new study of 9/11 survivors and victims’ family members shows that psychiatrists should be included in disaster first response teams to provide immediate assistance in alleviating early trauma symptoms ranging from sleeplessness to constant anxiety.

4. 9/11 Workers Exhibit Long-Lasting Sensory Loss

New research shows that workers exposed to the complex mixture of toxic airborne chemicals following the 9/11 disaster had a decreased ability to detect odors and irritants 2 years after the exposure.

A mock drug lab at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Expo (AIHce) in Denver revealed the hazards that clandestine meth labs and marijuana grow operations pose to the public and to first responders.

6. Lawmakers Appeal to EPA, DOL for Safety Enforcement During Oil Spill Cleanup

On June 3, two members of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure sent a letter to EPA and the Department of Labor (DOL) demanding that all response and recovery workers responding to the Deepwater Horizon BP Oil Spill are provided proper protective equipment, including respirators, and that all federal laws governing worker safety and respiratory protection are enforced.

7. One-Tenth of Soldiers Returning from Iraq Plagued by Mental Health Problems

Between 8.5 percent and 14 percent of soldiers returning from Iraq report serious functional impairment due to either posttraumatic stress disorder or depression, according to a report in the June issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.
