Autopsies of two workers who collapsed and died while repairing a submersible pump in a pump storage tank at a Kennebunkport, Maine, hotel on Sept. 27 reveals they were exposed to high levels of hydrogen sulfide gas. It is suspected that the men did not test the atmosphere before they entered the tank.

It was a hot, noisy summer for workers at PJ Trailers Manufacturing Co. Inc. and Delco Trailers Co. Inc., a similar company owned by PJ Trailers. Workers at the companies, which have the same president and management, allegedly were exposed to toxic welding fumes, fall hazards, noise hazards, inadequate machine guarding, hazardous dust and a lack of eye protection, among other hazards.

The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) found the lack of safe equipment design, ineffective mechanical integrity programs and a failure to investigate near misses contributed to a series of three accidents that occurred over a 33-hour period on Jan. 22 and 23, 2010, at the DuPont Corp.’s Belle, W.Va., chemical manufacturing plant. The final release – of deadly phosgene gas, which was used as a chemical weapon in World War I – resulted in the death of a worker.
