Deputies in Escambia County, Florida, are investigating the murder of Tyler John Hinkle, a 19-year-old Domino’s Pizza employee who was stabbed outside the store on Navy Boulevard in Pensacola.

Shareef Allman, a truck driver at Lehigh Southwest Cement Permanente Plant in Cupertino, Calif., allegedly opened fire during a company safety meeting, killing three people and injuring seven others. Allman then fled the scene, allegedly carjacking a woman to escape.

OSHA recently issued the Enforcement Guidance for Personal Protective Equipment in General Industry, a directive that provides enforcement personnel with instructions for determining whether employers have complied with OSHA PPE standards. The directive was effective Feb. 10.

5. Tyson Pays $32 Million to Settle PPE Doning and Doffing Lawsuit

A gamble made by Tyson several years ago didn’t pay off, and now the company is paying $32 million to compensate employees for the time they spend donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE), according to a consent decree filed in U.S. District Court in Columbus, Ga.

A recent study found that an average of 11,500 snow shoveling-related injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006.

8. Another Explosion at Metal Powder Plant in Tennessee Seriously Injures Workers

Emergency crews are on the scene after a third serious incident at the Hoeganaes Corp. in Gallatin, Tenn. An explosion was reported at the plant at approximately 6:30 am this morning, with reports that five workers were injured. Three of the workers are listed in critical condition at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center burn unit in Nashville.

At a Feb. 15 House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections hearing on OSHA’s regulatory agenda and its impact on job creation, witnesses slammed the agency for exploring new regulations that could damage businesses, imposing “substantial burdens” on employers without regard to cost concerns and overlooking the interests of small businesses.

10. OSHA Withdraws Proposed MSD Column on Injury/Illness Logs

On Jan. 25, OSHA announced that it has temporarily withdrawn its proposal to restore a column for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) on employer injury and illness logs, citing concerns from small businesses. Some safety stakeholders, however, expressed disappointment over the withdrawal.
