It's only the first day of winter and two weeks of winter storms already have battered parts of the country, stranding motorists and leaving residents and businesses without power. OSHA has created a Web page to help protect workers from hazards they may face during winter storm response and recovery operations.

2. NTSB Recommends Total Ban on Drivers' Use of Distracting Devices

On Dec. 13, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) made a big move: It rallied for a complete ban of all calling, texting, Web browsing and other activities performed on any type of personal electric device while behind the wheel – a ban that ideally would apply to every driver in the country.

4. MSHA Says Corporate Culture Led to Upper Big Branch Mine Explosion, Issues $10 Million Fine

MSHA issued the largest fine in its history – $10,825,368 – against the former Massey Energy Co. in connection to the 2010 Upper Big Branch Mine explosion. In its Dec. 6 fatal accident investigation report, MSHA attributed the root cause of the disaster to a corporate culture that valued production over safety.

5. The Five Off-the-Job Winter Activities that Can Land You in the ER

As many of us head out this week for winter activities, we’d be wise to remember that broken bones from snowboarding and sledding top the list of common visits to the emergency department (ED) during the winter months. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-quarter of all emergency hospital visits are attributed to snowboarding accidents, and half of all cases were for broken bones and sprains.
