The estimated direct U.S. workers compensation costs for the most disabling workplace injuries and illnesses in 2006 (the last year for which data are available) were $48.6 billion, according to the 2008 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index.

To mark the first anniversary of the Imperial Sugar explosion that killed 14 workers in February 2008, CSB Chairman John Bresland released a new video safety message asking federal regulators and businesses to increase efforts to prevent combustible dust fires and explosions.

5. Workplace Environmental Changes May Help Prevent Obesity

Simple changes to the workplace environment, such as signs reminding workers to choose healthier foods and get more exercise, may help reduce obesity and other occupational health risks, reports a study in the February Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
