2. EPA, DOJ and Mining Companies Reach $3 Million Settlement for Lava Cap Mine Cleanup

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California approved a $3 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of EPA, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and settling defendants Newmont Capital Ltd. and Newmont Mining Corp. of Canada Ltd. to resolve liability at the Lava Cap Mine Superfund Site in Nevada County, Calif.

3. OSHA Proposes $273,000 in Fines against Jamestown, N.Y., Employer for Lack of Asbestos Safeguards

OSHA cited Blackstone Business Enterprises Inc. of Jamestown, N.Y., for 18 alleged willful and serious violations of OSHA standards for failing to protect contract employees against asbestos hazards.

4. Safety Engineers, OSHA and Others Partner to Address Workplace Violence

In 2007, workplace homicides in the United States increased by 13 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Pensacola chapter is partnering with OSHA and several major organizations to "reduce and prevent exposure to workplace violence" in Florida.

5. New Standard Project to Protect Workers in Wind Generation Construction Operations

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) recently announced a new A10 Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) standard project to protect the safety and health of workers involved in construction and demolition operations for wind generation/turbine facilities.

6. Winter Weather presents Osteoporosis and Foot and Ankle Fracture Danger for Older Workers

Falls and winter ice can be dangerous, especially to older workers, who have special concerns about slipping and falling on an icy patch of ground. The American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) also is concerned about the increased dangers to older workers with osteoporosis (progressive bone loss) and the possibility of fractures to the foot or ankle, which often happen from falls on icy surfaces.
