1. GAO: Department of Labor Failing to Protect Workers

Federal agents posing as workers have completed an undercover investigation of the Department of Labor (DOL) that has resulted in claims that the department frequently mishandles serious worker complaints, placing many workers at risk. The outcome of the investigation is detailed in a new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that found DOL mishandled nine out of the 10 cases included in the undercover operation.

4. ASSE Remembers Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

In the aftermath of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that took 146 lives in New York City in 1911, the modern workplace safety movement began with the founding of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) later that year. To commemorate this important event, the Des Plaines, IL- based ASSE announced today that it is moving forward in planning its centennial celebration in 2011.

5. April 2009 Is National Safe Handling Awareness Month

In an act to further education surrounding the safe handling of hazardous drug exposure in the health care setting, April 2009 has been declared the first-ever National Safe Handling Awareness Month, with April 20 becoming the first National Safe Handling Awareness Day.

A federal program designed to help metropolitan public health agencies prepare to deliver essential medicines to the public after a large-scale bioterror attack or natural disease outbreak has succeeded in improving the level of readiness, according to a new RAND Corp. study.

7. New Tool May Assist in Earlier Detection of Asbestos-Related Diseases

Researchers from the National Center for Vermiculite and Asbestos-Related Cancers (NCVAC) outlined new radiographic approaches that may aid in the detection and diagnosis of asbestos-related lung disease at the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization's annual conference on March 28.
