Dr Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health
Organization (WHO), announced April 29 she was raising the current level
of influenza pandemic alert from Phase 4 to Phase 5. "Influenza
pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to
spread rapidly to every country in the world," said Chan, remarking on
the nine countries that officially have reported a total of 148 cases of
swine influenza A/H1N1 infection.

combustible dust, with plans to convene stakeholder meetings to evaluate
possible regulatory methods and request data and comments on issues

On April 24, Atlantic States Cast Iron Pipe Co. of
Phillipsburg, N.J., was sentenced to pay a fine of $8 million for
committing numerous environmental and worker safety crimes after what
EPA called the "longest trial in environmental crimes history." This
action follows the sentencing of four former Atlantic States managers to
federal prison terms ranging from 6 to 70 months.
