The Department of Labor (DOL) on Aug. 31 officially withdrew the controversial risk assessment rule that critics claimed could jeopardize worker safety by delaying rulemaking on occupational exposure to toxins and chemicals.

2. President's Advisors Predict as many as 90,000 H1N1 Flu Deaths

The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) recently released a report that indicates as many as 90,000 people - mostly children and young adults - could die from the H1N1 flu virus if it re-emerges this fall. While that number seems high, people are being reminded that approximately 40,000 deaths annually are attributed to seasonal flu.

4. AGC: National Construction Fatality Rate Declines 47 Percent

The national construction fatality rate declined 47 percent and the number of recordable safety incidents dropped 38 percent since the federal government switched to a safety oversight approach known as "collaborative safety" in 1998, according to an analysis of federal safety data released by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

5. In One Week, Three Workplace Deaths in Massachusetts

On August 31, A 51-year-old worker was killed when he fell from a forklift, striking his head on the floor inside Super-Dog Pet Food Co. warehouse in Taunton, Mass. It appears that the worker was not using an operator restraint system. This was the third workplace death in a week in the commonwealth.
