On Sept. 9, OSHA issued a final rule revising the PPE sections of its general industry, shipyard employment, longshoring and marine terminals standards to reflect recent editions of the applicable national consensus standards that incorporate advances in technology.

2. John Howard Reappointed NIOSH Director

On Sept. 3, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that John Howard, M.D., will return to his role as director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) effective immediately. He will serve the dual role of NIOSH director and World Trade Center Programs coordinator for HHS.

3. Labor Day: Are Young Workers the 'Lost Decade'

A new survey shows that while about half of Americans have experienced a significant emergency, many people still are not ready for the unexpected because they do not know what to do. In fact, only about 12 percent of Americans are ready for an emergency.

5. Report Details Violations of Employment and Labor Laws in U.S. Cities

A survey of 4,387 workers in low-wage industries across the three largest U.S. cities – Chicago, Los Angeles and New York – found that the core workplace protections many Americans take for granted are failing significant numbers of workers.

6. FMCSA Fines Lehane's Bus Service Inc. for Violating Multiple Safety Regulations

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued a civil penalty notice to Lehane’s Bus Service Inc. of New Castle, Del., for alleged federal motor carrier safety violations. The $83,120 fine was the result of an investigation by FMCSA’s Delaware Division into the school bus company’s safety compliance record.
