1. OSHA Issues Proposed Rule to Adopt the Globally Harmonized Hazard Communication System

Calling it the “first step in an aggressive regulatory agenda” for the Obama administration, acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Jordan Barab announced a proposed rule to align OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (hazcom standard) with provisions of the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The rule was published in the Sept. 30 Federal Register.

2. Investigation Confirms that Workplace Interventions Reduce the Incidence of Slips, Trips and Falls

Researchers conducting a scientific investigation aimed to reduce the incidence of slips, trips and falls for hospital workers who found evidence that implementation of a broad-scale prevention program can significantly reduce injury claims have won the Best Paper Award from the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety and the Ergonomics Society.

3. EPA Finalizes the Nation's First Greenhouse Gas Reporting System

On Jan. 1, 2010, EPA will require large emitters of heat-trapping emissions to begin collecting greenhouse gas (GHG) data under a new reporting system. This new program will cover approximately 85 percent of the nation’s GHG emissions and apply to roughly 10,000 facilities.

4. Worker Amputation Leads to Heavy Fine for Pennsylvania Employer Lacking Lockout/Tagout Programs

OSHA has cited Emanual Tire of Pennsylvania for alleged workplace safety and health violations, proposing $51,650 in penalties, following an investigation of a worker injury.
