Every March, most Americans welcome the switch to daylight saving time because of the longer days, but also dread losing an hour of sleep after they move their clocks forward. A recent study shows that losing just an hour of sleep could pose some dangerous consequences for those in hazardous work environments.

3. OSHA Fines Missouri Manufacturer $511,000 Following Worker Fatality

OSHA has cited Loren Cook Co., a manufacturer in of Springfield, Mo., with seven alleged willful and three alleged serious violations after a worker was killed by an ejected machine part on May 13, 2009.

4. GHS: What You Need to Know

On Sept. 30, acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Jordan Barab announced a proposed rule to align OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (hazcom standard) with provisions of the United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

5. AAA Pushes Texting Law in Pennsylvania

On Nov. 9, AAA officials joined Pennsylvania state legislators to urge passage of a state law to ban text messaging while driving.

6. House Democrats Introduce H1N1 Flu Emergency Sick-Leave Bill

On Nov. 3, U.S. Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, and Rep. Lynn Woolsey D-Calif., chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee, announced emergency temporary legislation that will guarantee 5 paid sick days for a worker sent home or directed to stay home by their employer for a contagious illness, such as the H1N1 flu virus.
