The top 10 most cited OSHA violations were unveiled Oct. 27 at 97th annual National Safety Council (NSC) Congress and Expo in Orlando, Fla., with scaffolding and fall protection violations once again topping the list.

A recent study suggests that individual risk factors such as body mass index (BMI), wrist dimension ratio, steroid use, menopause and more may influence the likelihood of developing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), according to the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM).

8. GAO: OSHA's VPP Program Lacking in Oversight

A report released by the Government Accounting Office (GAO) takes issue with OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program, saying the agency’s internal controls are not sufficient to ensure that only qualified worksites participate in the VPP and that OSHA has not developed the proper goals or measures to assess the performance of VPP.

9. Two Workers Dead, Dozens Injured After Blast at N.C. ConAgra Foods Facility

An explosion rocked a ConAgra Foods facility in Garner, N.C. around 11:30 a.m. on June 9, killing two workers and sending more than 40 workers to local hospitals, four of them with critical burns. Four fighters were sent to the hospital after they inhaled ammonia, which is used at the facility as a refrigerant.

10. OSHA Updates PPE Standards to Reference Consensus Standards

On Sept. 9, OSHA issued a final rule revising the PPE sections of its general industry, shipyard employment, longshoring and marine terminals standards to reflect recent editions of the applicable national consensus standards that incorporate advances in technology.
