Bills Will Impact Electrical Industry
Major energy legislation under consideration in both
houses of Congress contain a host of provisions that could spur
additional demand for electrical products. The House bill was expected
to go to the full House for a vote this Friday or Saturday. The Senate
bill could go up for a vote as early as September.
Southern
California Edison to Create Nation’s Largest Solar Panel
Installation
A plan proposed by Southern California Edison (SCE),
Rosemead, Calif., for the largest U.S. installation of advanced solar
panels on otherwise unused large commercial rooftops across Southern
California was approved June 19 by the California Public Utilities
Commission.
During the next five years, SCE will install, own and operate 250
megawatts of solar generating capacity. The utility also will conduct
competitive solicitations offering long-term power contracts to
independent solar power providers that will install an additional 250
megawatts, bringing to 500 megawatts the total generating capacity of
the project — the largest photovoltaic program ever undertaken.
Grainger
Invests in Japan’s MRO Market
In its second move in the past month to expand
internationally, W.W. Grainger Inc., Lake Forest, Ill., announced that
it will increase its stake in the Japanese firm MonotaRO. MonotaRO was
created in 2000 as a joint venture between Grainger and Sumitomo to
supply maintenance, repair and operating (MRO) supplies in Japan.
Housing
Starts Post 17.2 Percent Gain in May
Nationwide housing starts rebounded in May from record
lows in the previous month, posting a 17.2 percent gain to a seasonally
adjusted annual rate of 532,000 units, according to U.S. Commerce
Department figures released on June 16. While driven largely by a
double-digit gain in the volatile multi-family sector, the uptick also
reflected a substantial gain on the single-family side of the housing
market and applied consistently to all regions of the country.

Leaman to
lead Osram Sylvania
Osram Sylvania (Danvers, Mass.): Rick Leaman was named
president and CEO effective Oct. 1. He will succeed Charlie Jerabek,
who
will assume a new role as the company’s vice chairman. The
announcement was made by Martin Goetzeler, CEO of Munich-based OSRAM
GmbH. Leaman has been executive vice president and general manager of
Osram’s global Automotive Lighting division in Munich, Germany since
2006.
Omni Cable
names Donato executive VP of sales operations
Omni Cable Corp. (West Chester, Pa.): Greg Donato is
executive vice president of sales operations. In this newly created
position he will work with Omni Cable’s 10 branch locations across
the
U.S. on key sales growth initiatives. Donato has more than 25 years
experience in the electrical distribution industry managing inside and
outside sales teams as well as extensive P&L responsibility.

NEMA
& Southwire’s Thorn call on Congress to combat counterfeiting
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association
(NEMA), Rosslyn, Va. has called on Congress to appropriate funds to
implement programs authorized to combat counterfeiting that were
contained in the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act
(Public
Law 110-403), also known as PRO-IP, which was approved last year. NEMA
actively supported this legislation and provided input to Congress.
NEMRA
headquarters moves to Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Effective June 29, the corporate office for the
National
Electrical Manufacturers’ Representatives Association (NEMRA) will be
relocating from Tarrytown, N.Y., to New Hampshire.
