Grainger Enters Energy Services Market with Purchase of Alliance Energy Solutions
Industrial distribution giant W.W. Grainger made a move this week into the energy services market, closing a deal to buy Alliance Energy Solutions, an energy services company (ESCO) based in Oxford, Conn. Terms of the all-cash deal were not disclosed.

Alliance Energy Solutions (AES), which was founded in 2001 and posted annual sales of $20 million in 2008, handles broad-range energy-efficiency retrofits, but its primary focus is on energy-efficient lighting. That emphasis on lighting seems to have been a key for Chicago-based Grainger.

A.E. Petsche Acquired by Arrow Electronics for Expansion in Aerospace and Defense
Arrow Electronics, Inc., Melville, N.Y., agreed to acquire A.E. Petsche Co., Arlington, Texas, a distributor of interconnect products, including specialty wire, cable and harness management solutions, to the aerospace and defense markets. Terms of the deal, expected to close by the end of 2009, were not disclosed.

United Technologies to Buy GE Security
United Technologies Corp. (UTC) has signed a definitive agreement to purchase the GE Security business from General Electric (GE) for $1.82 billion. The deal has been approved by the boards of both companies, but closing depends on regulatory approvals.

GE Security, which includes the fire detection systems operations that were once Edwards Systems Technology, purchased from SPX Corp. in 2005, supplies security and life safety technologies for commercial and residential applications that include fire detection and life safety systems, intrusion alarms, and video surveillance and access control systems.

NEMA Sees Slight Increase in Industrial Controls Market in Third Quarter of 2009
Demand for industrial controls increased modestly during the third quarter of 2009, with NEMA’s Primary Industrial Controls Index rising 1.6 percent versus the April-to-June period. While this represented the first quarter-to-quarter gain since the second quarter of 2008 for the index, published by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Rosslyn, Va., shipments remain at a very low level, with the index still more than 30 percent below the third quarter of 2008. A broader measure of industrial controls demand, the Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives Index, posted a 0.9 percent increase over the second quarter of 2009, but also continues to reflect lackluster demand with a 29.5 percent decline on a year-over-year basis.

Resin Systems wins $100-million contract with HD Supply Utilities
Resin Systems Inc., Calgary, Alberta, a manufacturer of advanced composite products for infrastructure markets, has entered into a distribution agreement with HD Supply Utilities, Atlanta, North America’s largest electric utilities distributor. The agreement includes an initial purchase order for the company’s RStandard poles exceeding $100 million over the first half of the initial term, subject to applicable terms and conditions.

Honeywell gets smart grid grant
Honeywell, Minneapolis, announced that it has been awarded an $11.4-million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the federal government’s effort to rebuild the nation’s energy grid. The grant, one of several awarded from a smart grid funding package under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), will support a peak pricing response program for commercial and industrial facilities in the Southern California Edison (SCE) service territory, helping them automatically implement energy management strategies to reduce costs and improve efficiency.
