WESCO Distribution, Inc., Pittsburgh, announced plans to acquire Brews Supply, Ltd., headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, through its Canadian subsidiary. Founded in 1927, Brews is a full-line distributor of industrial, utility and commercial products with branches in Calgary, Edmonton, Mississauga and Fort McMurray.

Electrical Distributors Give Congress a Reality-Check on Impact of Legislation
United States Senators and Representatives got the real-world business perspective of electrical distributors from their districts on a number of issues earlier this month when a pack of about 30 members of the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED) descended on Washington, D.C., on Sept. 7-8 for the association’s first-ever Congressional Fly-In.

Contracts for Electrical Work Still Flowing from Federal Government
The recent uproar over the $535 million loan that the federal government gave to now-bankrupt Solyndra Inc., a manufacturer of photovoltaic panels, put government spending programs back in the spotlight.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provided millions in funding for the construction or retrofit of federal buildings, Veteran Administration hospitals and military bases from 2009 to 2010. But according to information gathered by Electrical Marketing, most of the government spending on electrical work at federal buildings is not funded now through the ARRA.


Housing Starts Drop Five Percent in August
Privately-owned housing starts in August were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 571,000, five percent below the revised July estimate of 601,000 and 5.8 percent below the Aug. 2010 rate of 606,000, according to the most recent housing data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

FBI agents search Solyndra headquarters
Solar manufacturer Solyndra is in the news for all the wrong reasons these days. Not long after Solyndra filed Chapter 11 and terminated 1,100 workers, the company, which received a $535 million federal loan guarantee from the DOE to build a new facility, got an early-morning visit from FBI agents with search warrants at its Fremont, Calif., headquarters.

ICON International sold to Endo Lighting of Japan
Woodbridge Group, a mergers-and-acquisitions firm in New Haven, Conn., announced the sale of its client ICON International, a manufacturer of architectural lighting, to Endo Lighting Corp., Osaka, Japan.

Robust growth for T5 and T8 lamp shipments during first half of 2011
NEMA’s shipment indexes for T5 and T8 linear fluorescent lamps increased 30.2 and 12.5 percent, respectively, during the first half of 2011 compared to the same period last year. Moreover, the Q2 2011 index values for both T5 and T8 lamps were at record highs.

Crescent Electric Supply installs EV charger at Rockdale branch
Crescent Electric Supply Co., East Dubuque, Ill., has selected its Rockdale, Ill., branch to install its first electric vehicle charging station as part of the company’s nationwide program to support the installation, training and service of EV supply equipment.
