GE announces Edison Award winners at LightFair

At this week’s LightFair, the 2011 GE Edison Award was presented to Glenn Heinmiller, Paul Zaferiou and Dan Weissman of Lam Partners, Cambridge, Mass., for lighting the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. The first permanent home of the United States Institute of Peace is prominently located near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The translucent wing-like roofs that connect the building's three curving sections presented the most challenging lighting problem: to light the roofs with no visible sources so they glow softly both inside and outside. A pervasive lighting theme, featuring GE T5 fluorescent lamps, is present throughout the building. Light sources are fully concealed or designed to disappear, revealing and animating, but never competing with the architecture. The GE Edison Award competition is open to those lighting professionals who creatively employ significant use of GE light sources (lamps and/or LEDs) in a lighting design project completed during the previous calendar year. Lighting control systems stand out at LightFair

While the 22rd annual LightFair being held this week in Las Vegas is dominated by new LED light sources and lighting fixtures, new wireless lighting control systems that control LEDs and more traditional lighting systems caught the attention of many attendees on the first day of the show, which is expected to draw more than 20,000 lighting professionals.

The show’s popular LFI Innovation Awards, which kick off LightFair each year gave attendees an early look at some of the new wireless control systems that would be on the shore floor. Several of the 34 entries in the lighting controls category offered wireless control of lighting fixtures, including nWiFi Wireless Solutions from Acuity Brands, Conyers, Ga.; Owlet Wireless Control System from Schreder Lighting, Addison, Ill.; the LeafNut Wireless Lighting Control System from Venture Lighting International, Streetsboro, Ohio; and the wireless High Bay Occupancy Sensor from Steinel, Bloomington, Minn.

CAST Lighting, Hawthorne, N.J., won the coveted Most Innovative Product of the Year Award for its Perimeter Lighting product, a 7W 24V luminaire that provides lighting along perimeter fences in large areas for military, temporary lighting and other applications. Other big winners in the 2012 LFI Innovation Awards, which attracted 228 entries, were: Design Excellence Award-Fin Light 5/8-inch LED lighting system from Sensitile Systems, Ypsilanti, Mich.; Technical Innovation Award-Warm Dim LED Downlights, Juno Lighting, Des Plaines, Ill.; and Judges’ Citation Award-Definity Motion Activated PAR 30, Lighting Science Group, Satellite Beach, Fla. As expected, the awards competition was loaded with LEDs. In the Conventional Lamps, Retrofit/Replacement LED Lamps there were 33 LED entries, and there were dozens of other LED products in other product categories. It was interesting to see some well-known lighting names in the electrical market standing with the many boutique lighting companies that won awards. Among the category winners were Cooper Lighting, Juno Lighting/Schneider Electric, Lutron, Philips and Sylvania.

Honda prefers Leviton for EVSE

American Honda Motor Co. announced that Leviton Manufacturing Co., Melville, N.Y., has been selected as Honda's preferred electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) provider for customer and dealer EV charging. Honda will be introducing two battery-electric vehicles beginning with the 2013 Honda Fit EV this summer, and the Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Sedan next winter. The Accord will use an all-new, two-motor hybrid system which continuously moves through three different modes - all-electric, with up to a 15 miles per charge range; gasoline-electric; and direct-drive - to maximize driving and fuel efficiency, especially during city driving. Schaeffer Marketing Group to rep Cree and Beta

Just saw in the Electrical Board of Missouri and Illinois' Flash newsletter that Schaeffer Marketing Group, St. Louis, will represent Cree and Beta Lighting in eastern Missouri and southern Illinois. The publication also reported that Jim Engelhard has joined Butler Supply Inc. as regional vice president. A thanks to Bill and Annie Regan at the Electrical Board for providing this news tip!

Maine to tap into tidal power

This Forbes article says Maine’s Public Utilities Commission will allow three public utilities to approved purchase power from a grid-connected tidal energy plant.

Residential PV power purchasing programs make news

Roof Diagnostics, a solar panel installer based in Spring Lake, N.J., made the New York Times recently in an article on its residential installation program. The company markets its services in part through 22 Home Depot stores in New Jersey and also has operations in Massachusetts. The company is a full-service roofing company with over 15 years in business. It services all aspects of roofing; including consulting, maintenance, roof restoration, and roof replacement.

LED recessed troffers

The ECO-T LED Recessed Troffer, offered in 2-foot x 2-foot and 2-foot x 4-foot sizes, is designed for installation into T-bar grid (“drop in”) ceilings and offers a high color rendering index (CRI) of 84. The ECO-T is offered in correlated color temperatures (CCT) of 3,500K, 4,100K and 5,000K and comes standard with a dimming driver and prismatic clear diffuser for higher lumens. A translucent diffuser for softer illumination is also available. The 2-foot x 2-foot 45W model replaces a typical 2U32 fluorescent fixture and exceeds 3700 lumens while the 2-foot x 4-foot 55W model replaces four F32T8/28W fluorescent lamps and exceeds 4,900 lumens. LED landscape lighting

The LFLED5 is a 5W LED landscape light designed to replace small-scale landscape floodlights and spotlights. Equivalent to a 35W MR16 and able to replace up to 50W MR16 technology, the compact LFLED5 delivers as much as 85% energy savings relative to existing halogen systems and represents a high-performing, long-lasting and affordable approach to lighting a broad range of landscape applications. The LED in RAB’s LFLED5 features an L70 lifespan of 50,000 hours based on LM-80 data, ensuring years of reliable and low-maintenance operation, while the luminaire further incorporates a specialized microprismatic lens to deliver even and consistent light output. It utilizes line voltage (120V-240V). RAB Lighting

Outdoor LED luminaires

Designed and engineered with Speirs + Major, a global lighting design firm, the Aeroblades luminaire takes a bold approach to architectural street, area and security lighting. The Aeroblades luminaires can be fine-tuned with NanoOptic technology optical control and the number of luminaire blades to meet specific illumination, while the modular design of the Aeroblades series enables customers to custom-design luminaires to best fit their application. Aeroblades luminaires will initially be available in more than 300 combinations, including two-, four- or six -blade versions, 20 optical distributions, four color temperatures (3,000K, 3,500K, 4,000K and 5,700K), four drive currents, two pole-mount and wall-mount versions and seven DeltaGuard paint finishes.
