New Jersey's Day In the Sun
Public Service Electric & received approval from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) on July 29 to invest $515 million in 80 megawatts of solar projects, doubling the state’s solar capacity and creating green jobs. Under an agreement reached in its Solar 4 All filing, the utility expects to complete the installations by the end of 2013. The program has two segments, each 40 megawatts in size. The first segment consists of installing a solar unit (a small distributed solar system of approximately 200W) on 200,000 utility poles in PSE&G’s service territory, which includes the state’s six largest cities and roughly 300 rural and suburban communities. It will be the largest pole-attached solar installation in the world. The solar units will be connected directly into PSE&G’s electric distribution system and the power will be sold into the PJM wholesale grid.

New York Times Article Cites Siemens Study on LED Lighting Effectiveness
An article published this week in the New York Times says lighting study recently released by Siemens, the parent company of Osram/Sylvania says today’s LED lamps are essentially as energy efficient as compact fluorescents, in the amount of energy needed to create, recycle and provide light.

Sheryl Crow To Help Open USGBC's Greenbuild With Chase Field Performance
Nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow will help open the Greenbuild 2009 Conference on Nov. 11 in Phoenix. The concert will be held at Chase Field, home to Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks. “Beyond her music, Sheryl Crow’s informed and effective advocacy made her the natural choice to help us open Greenbuild in a new and powerful way,” said Rick Fedrizzi, USGBC president, CEO and founding chair. “More than 25,000 people gather every year at Greenbuild because we know that the building industry can play a major role in reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy independence and economic growth.”

Wind Work Now Providing GexPro Services with $100+ Million in Green Sales
Gexpro, formerly GE Supply and now part of Rexel’s global empire, has quietly built a sizeable presence in the wind market and has sales of approximately $100 million in this market niche.

The company sells wind industry original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) electrical products such as power cable, cable tray, lighting fixtures and cable harnesses, according to a recent interview with Robert Connors, division president, Gexpro Services, published in the May/June issue of Wind Systems magazine. That article said Gexpro also provides wind OEMs with products and services for their "nacelle, blade, and tower applications (including) bolts, fasteners, brackets, ladders, platform assemblies, and a lot of other large-diameter hardware for the tower internals."

To build relationships with these customers Gexpro Services banks on its experience in national account contracts, lean manufacturing and the Quality process.

According to the company’s website, Gexpro Services also works closely with GE’s Wind Energy unit. Says the promotion, "Gexpro Services’ product expertise and procedural best practices are helping GE manufacture more wind power with fewer man-hours and lower product cost than ever before. Working closely with GE Wind Energy, the Gexpro Services team in Pensacola, Fla., developed a world-class kitting program for machine heads and hubs.

"From sourcing and specifying to staging and shipping, Gexpro is delivering kits for more than 2,000 wind turbines each year. The massive kits include scores of parts, from fractions of an inch to ten feet across –- delivered together and through a LEAN pull methodology. Only a company with the resources and flexibility of Gexpro Services could execute on such a complex operation so simply and error free."

Along with its focus on wind energy and other energy markets, GexPro Services is providing supply chain services to several verticals, including the transportation, aerospace, commercial and industrial technology markets. The company draws from an inventory of 126,000 stock-keeping units warehoused in its global warehouse network.

DOE's Sept. 10 Webcast on EnergyStar Solid-State Lighting Outdoor Area Lighting
On September 10 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will host a 90-minute live webcast on EnergyStar Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Outdoor Lighting Criteria. On July 1, DOE published draft EnergyStar criteria covering solid state lighting (SSL)-based outdoor area and roadway lighting, outdoor wall packs, parking garage, and canopy luminaires. Stakeholder comments were received through July 31. In the upcoming webcast, Jason Tuenge of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) will present background on development of these draft performance requirements; comparison of the new Fitted Target Efficacy metric to other metrics for outdoor area lighting; and review of key comments and considerations in finalizing the criteria. The webcast will be moderated by Kelly Gordon of PNNL. The webcast will begin promptly at 1 p.m. ET and will include a 60 minute presentation, followed by a 30-minute question and answer session with attendees. Duke Energy to Install More than a Million Smart Meters in Smart Grid Initiative
Duke Energy has applied for $200 million in federal infrastructure funds to accelerate a $1-billion electric grid modernization project in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky -- one of the largest "smart grid" initiatives in the U.S. The company also applied for an additional $14 million in federal funds for smart grid transmission lines and demonstration projects in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Essentially an "energy internet," the smart grid will use two-way digital communication to improve energy efficiency, bolster system reliability and detect power outages and integrate renewable energy into the grid and reduce carbon emissions. In Ohio, Duke Energy soon will launch a mass deployment of smart grid technology, including more than 700,000 electric smart meters and 450,000 natural gas smart meters at customers' homes and businesses. In Indiana, Duke Energy is seeking approval from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission to install approximately 800,000 smart meters. Duke Energy submitted its applications to the U.S. Department of Energy, which will award $4.5 billion in smart grid grants nationwide as part of the economic stimulus and infrastructure bill passed by Congress and signed into law by President Obama earlier this year. Duke Energy plans to eventually convert its entire electricity-delivery infrastructure into an advanced, state-of-the-art smart grid.

"We intend to transform the way electricity is delivered to, and managed by, our customers," said Todd Arnold, senior vice president for smart grid and customer systems at Duke Energy, America's third-largest electric utility. "Our goal is to replace today's non-interactive electric grid with a highly interactive two-way communication grid that uses advanced digital technology."

Wind Turbine Cable
Oil-, solvent-, chemical- and fuel-resistant, GreenLINX Cables are manufactured specifically to withstand the rigors of wind power environments. Their flexible construction allows for easy termination and installation and helps the cables to fit in tight spaces. GreenLINX cables also carry Underwriters Laboratories’ WTTC approval for 1,000V cable. In years past there was no standard for cables used in wind turbines. This new standard, which stands for Wind Turbine Tray Cable, is now required by the UL for use in wind turbines. Not using cables with WTTC approval can mean costly replacements down the road. The cables are available through a new partnership with C&M Corp. Allied Wire & Cable

LED Light Strips
Maintaining 70% of their initial luminance at 40,000 hours and only using one-third the energy of fluorescent lights, LF1B light strips provide 62.5 Lumens/Watt, while producing very little heat (even less than a fluorescent lamp); and three new colors: cool white, warm white, yellow and red. These light units are designed for areas where repairs cannot be easily performed, as well as for cabinet lighting. IDEC Corp.
